«Breaking News» Meghan McCain says she struggles to call herself a Republican in the age of Trump

Meghan McCain of The View says she finds it difficult to identify herself as a Republican in the age of Donald Trump.

The daughter of the late Senator John McCain said on Sunday that while she still holds conservative views, she finds herself in a ‘no-man’s land’ for Republicans who value ‘character.’

‘I'm still a member of the Republican party and I vote a Republican ticket,’ McCain told Van Jones of CNN.

‘But Republicanism is so tied up with being for Trump.’

The 34-year-old former Fox News personality is a conservative voice on The View, the ABC daytime talk show in which she, Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Sunny Hostin, and Abby Huntsman discuss the news of the day.

Huntsman and McCain are often at odds politically with everyone else on the panel.

Despite feelings of alienation from the GOP, McCain says not to mistake her for a liberal.

‘I'm not a liberal and I think it would be intellectually dishonest for me to go on TV and start espousing beliefs I don't believe in,’ she said.

Nonetheless, McCain says her moderate brand of Republicanism is having trouble finding a home in the current political climate.

‘We're so outnumbered,’ she said.

‘I think something like 80 percent of Republicans support President Trump.

‘Maybe they're doing it because they don't have another option but I think the populist Trump brand really has taken over, which is why there's this sort of no-mans-land that I'm in because I didn't become a Never Trump-er, either.’

‘Never Trumper’ is a term used to describe the wing of the Republican Party that is opposed to Trump and vows never to support him.

McCain said that the GOP under Trump ‘is not what I recognize anymore.’

‘Its character seems to be gone,’ she said.

‘Growing up, my father was, like, militant about character.

‘Now it seems like lying is OK. Stealing, it's a little nebulous.

‘I don't think those are American characteristics. And it scares me – a lot.’

McCain says that the recent argument over Trump’s proposed border wall has her feeling like she doesn’t fully belong in either camp.

‘Sometimes I feel like when I hear, “Anyone who supports the wall is racist,” it's a trigger for me because I know people who are not racist who support the wall,’ she says.

McCain wants her liberal friends to understand the viewpoint of Americans living near the border who are impacted by illegal immigration.

She also takes offense at the notion that Republicans are inherently racist because of the policy positions they support.

McCain said her father was the victim of a racist smear campaign during his unsuccessful run for the Republican nomination in 2000 against the eventual nominee, George W. Bush.

‘Of all the things I've ever been accused of, (being called a racist) is the most deeply hurtful,' she said.

‘There was a very famous political moment in 2000 when my father was running (for the Republican presidential nomination) when (Bush campaign manager) Karl Rove had a whisper campaign done saying my father had an illegitimate black child, who is my sister Bridget,’ she recalled.

‘So at a very young age, I had to reconcile (Republicanism and race).’

The McCain family refused to extend an invite to the state funeral to Trump, who mocked the late Senator for being captured during the Vietnam War.

Trump has also repeatedly criticized McCain for sinking the GOP-led effort to repeal the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare.

At the state funeral in Washington, Meghan McCain used her eulogy to forcefully denounce Trump, though never by name.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
