«Breaking News» M&S launches pioneering new recycling scheme by putting green bins in stores and schools

Plastic recycling bins will be set up in hundreds of Marks & Spencer stores and schools in a pioneering scheme.

The packaging would otherwise go to landfill, be burned or end up as litter.

The scheme is being introduced in eight stores and 20 primary schools - with the goal of having a national schehem by the end of the year.

It comes as the recycling system run by local councils is broken, with many refusing to take certain types of plastic. In some areas, plastic put out for recycling ends up being burned.

The plastic collected in the bins at M&S branches and schools will be recycled into store fittings, furniture and playground equipment.

M&S said the bins themselves are made from recycled plastic. They will allow customers and schoolchildren to leave currently non-recyclable packaging such as black ready-meal trays, crisp packets, sauce sachets and some cosmetics containers. These are not recycled by councils.

Laura Fernandez, of M&S, said: ‘As a business, we’re committed to reducing the amount of plastic we use. We have already started phasing out non-recyclable packaging from our products.

‘As we continue to work towards our plastic reduction goals, we want to go a step further and help our customers and the next generation to have a real impact on the environment.’

The retailer has teamed up with chemical company Dow to ensure the plastic that is collected is recycled and turned into a range of useful products.

Dow is a founding member of the Alliance To End Plastic Waste, which has committed more than £1billion to manage, recycle and re-use plastic, rather than see it thrown away, potentially ending up in the sea.

The M&S ‘Take Back’ scheme has been launched at branches in Tolworth, south-west London; Cribbs Causeway, Bristol; Westfield, Stratford, East London; Waterside, Paddington, London; Loughton, north-east London; Bluewater in Kent; Fosse Park, Leicester; and Peterborough.

Bins will be installed at recycling collection points at primary schools in partnership with the Wastebuster group.

Pupils will be taught about the importance of recycling and reducing plastic waste.

The move by M&S is part of a wider attack on plastic waste. It is running a trial to sell 90 lines of fruit and vegetables without packaging at the Tolworth shop.

The retailer was the first high street giant to introduce a 5p charge on plastic bags in response to the Daily Mail’s ‘Banish The Bags’ campaign 11 years ago.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
