«Breaking News» LG to unveil new smartphone with a detachable second screen next month, report claims

LG could be the next company to capitalize on the folding phone trend.

The South Korean smartphone giant is expected to release a new device next month that features an optional 'second screen' attachment, according to CNET

It wouldn't be a folding phone like other firms have released; instead, it would be more akin to a phone case that has a second screen built into it.

The device could launch at the annual Mobile World Congress trade show, which kicks off on February 25th.

Scant details are known about the phone's specs or functionality beyond that it could be called the 'G8,' CNET reported.

It wouldn't be all that surprising if LG were to release a rollable, folding or dual-screen smartphone.

In an interview with Tom's Guide, the company confirmed that it's developing both rollable and foldable phones.

'We are exploring many different form factors for phones, including foldable and rollable,' Ip Park, CTO and president of LG Electronics, told Tom's Guide.

'Because display technology has grown so much that it can make it into very flexible form factors.

SAMSUNG'S FOLDING PHONE

Samsung's foldable smartphone was announced last week and leaked reports from Korea are claiming it will be more expensive that its rival, the iPhone XS.

It is believed the pioneering handset will cost approximately two million Korean Won, which is around £1,370 ($1,760), before taxes.

The pricey gadget has been labelled the Samsung 'Galaxy F' and is expected to be available to buy in early 2019.

iPhone's current marquee device, the XS, starts at £999 ($999) while the larger XS Max is available for a minimum of £1,099 ($1,099).

Samsung says the 7.3-inch 'Infinity Flex Display' can be folded 'hundreds of thousands of times' thanks to the display's thinness and flexibility

Kim Jang-yeol, head of research at Golden Bridge Investment, told the Korean Times that the device will be so expensive as a result of it being the first mainstream device to enter the unknown territory of foldable handsets.

According to the leak, the screen will expand to a 7.3-inch OLED screen when unfurled and it will shrink to a 4.5-inch display when closed.

The device is shrouded in mystery and Samsung has yet to release any confirmed details about the gadget's specifications or release.

Samsung's Developer Conference last week provided the first glimpse at the device when a prototype was displayed on a deliberately dark stage.

The tech giant has already confirmed that the phone has an Infinity Flex Display, which enables it to transform into a phone or a tablet when it's opened and closed.

'And with 5G, if the market requires much bigger screens, we'll need to fold it or roll it. So we'll explore,' he added.

Phonemakers have increasingly turned their attention to devices that feature a futuristic form-factor.

Samsung is expected to unveil its folding phone, reportedly to be called the Galaxy F, at its Unpacked event next month.

But Samsung was handily beat by China's Royole, which debuted its first commercially available flexible phone at the Consumer Electronics Show this month.

Its $1,300 FlexPai phone doubles as a tablet when it’s unfurled – making it, in that form, ‘the biggest smartphone in the world right now.’

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
