A hospital worker appeared in court accused of placing a plastic bag over an elderly patient's head.
Santosh Bhatta, 31, was initially arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after the incident on Ward 11 of Broadgreen Hospital, on July 22 last year.
However he was later charged with the lesser offence of being a care worker who ill-treated or wilfully neglected the victim, 79-year-old Olinda Mansfield.
Bhatta, from Wirral, appeared at Liverpool Magistrates' Court today where he pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Miss Mansfield, who it is believed had 'no friends or family', has since died, although her death is believed to be unrelated to the July incident.
At the time sources told the Liverpool Echo Miss Mansfield was discovered by horrified nurses with the bag over her head in a room on Ward 11.
A male health care assistant was said to be in the room with her at the time, and when challenged allegedly told the witnesses they had been playing 'peekaboo'.
Today the case was deemed too serious to be heard in the lower courts and committed to Liverpool Crown Court, where Bhatta is due to appear next month.
He was released on bail with conditions not to enter Broadgreen Hospital or communicate with any members of staff from Ward 11.
The Royal Liverpool & Broadgreen University Hospitals Trust (RLBUHT), which runs both hospitals, said after the incident there was no ongoing risk to patients.
A spokesperson said: 'We are investigating a serious incident at Broadgreen Hospital. We reported the matter to Merseyside Police and are assisting them with their enquiries.
'We have taken appropriate action and there is currently no suggestion that patients or their loved ones should be concerned for their safety.'
A second Broadgreen health care assistant was also interviewed under caution over an unrelated alleged assault on Miss Mansfield, but no further action was taken by Merseyside Police.
Ward 11 was recently subject to a £1m investment and adapted to take overflow patients from the Royal Liverpool Hospital.
The move was designed to create space for patients, who are mainly elderly and with complex needs, awaiting places in nursing homes or discharge to their own homes with carer support.

However trust data showed that ward 11 was understaffed by nurses in day-time hours for May and June.
Average fill rates, or the number of hours nurses are actually available to treat patients compared with the number of hours deemed necessary, were below the national target of 80% for both months.
The Trust also recorded 'a spike in medication incidents.'
According to a Safe Staffing Report, the Trust underestimated the complexity and severity of patients Ward 11 would be required to treat.
The report said: 'Following discussions with the senior nursing team and the care group it has been acknowledged that actual patient acuity and dependency is higher than originally profiled when planning took place to staff this ward, therefore the establishment across Ward 11 and the Frailty Unit has been reviewed.
'As a result additional nursing resource will be allocated to Ward 11 and the recruitment process has commenced to support this.'

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
