«Breaking News» Nutritionist Susie Burrell reveals the common foods that could be making you sick

Dodgy chicken always seems to get the blame when people come down with a bout of serious food poisoning.

But often it can be the unsuspecting foods that could be making you sick.

Appearing on Channel Seven's breakfast show Sunrise, Sydney nutritionist Susie Burrell revealed the four foods susceptible to food poisoning if not stored correctly.

Cookie dough

For many people, one of the best parts of baking is getting to eat the leftover raw cookie dough from the bowl or spoon.

But Susie warns against eating raw cookie dough. The uncooked flour carries an E.coli risk while the raw eggs may cause food poisoning.

'It's the main reason people can get sick,' she said.

'Cookie dough is quite popular because you can buy ice cream with cookie dough in it but it's good to be mindful, if you're dealing with a weak immune system, particularly small children.

'It's better to eat it when they're baked than have it as a raw cookie dough.'

Gourmet salads with chicken

Susie said gourmet salads with chicken are a common cause of food poisoning.

'Often because they are sitting out for a long period of time,' she said.

'It might have feta cheese in it, it might even have egg in it, might have mayonnaise mixed through it, which again contains raw egg.'

She urged shoppers to always check the use-by-dates when purchasing pre-packaged salads from supermarkets.

'Sometimes when you look at the bag, the bottom can look a bit yucky, and it only takes one little contaminated piece to affect the whole bag,' Susie explained.

'And when we take it home, it sits out again so always wash your salads thoroughly.'

She said people should always wash their store-bought salads, even if the packaging says 'pre-washed'.

'You must wash those ones out of the bags. It does say pre-washed but I would always wash it again because it has sat there for a long period, you don't know what the turnover time is.'

Rice

Uncooked rice can contain spores of bacteria called Bacillus cereus, which can survive when rice is cooked.

Susie said you should only reheat your rice once.

'Make sure you get it to a reasonably high temperature to try and destroy some of those bacteria if they're present,' she explained.

She said reheating your rice multiple times can lead to food poisoning.

Olives

Surprisingly, not storing olives properly can leave you feeling sick.

'Olives can sit open for long periods of time, you might put them out on a platter and then put them back in [the jar],' she said.

She explained that if you put the leftovers back into the jar, it can contaminate the rest of the olives.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
