«Breaking News» Experts weigh in on the rise of vaginal SKINCARE products

The amount of skincare products has grown immensely in the last decade with each item boasting cures to ailments on the face.

Now consumers are seeing a growth in intimate skincare products — ranging from cleansers, to serums, to even masks for the genital region — that each claim to improve the appearance and function. But is it a necessary part of the beauty routine?

In an interview with DailyMail.com, Manon Pilon, creator of Elle by Nelly De Vuyst  intimate skincare line, explained why she wanted to launch intimate beauty products focused around the vagina.

'It started quite frankly with my daughter,' Manon said. She explained how her daughter experienced recurring yeast infections starting at the young age of eight, but there was nothing on the market to solve the problem.

'It started with that one product that really helped my daughter to get rid of all the yeast infection recurrence because, of course, she wanted to wear the tight clothing like her friends and would always have these infections,' Manon explained.

Vaginal yeast infections are common in women with an estimated 75 per cent of females anticipated to get at least one in their lifetime, according to the Mayo Clinic

Manon, who has worked in the skincare industry for 35 years, explained the frustration of watching her young daughter continually get an infection no matter what she did. So she decided there needed to be a clean line on the market that was specifically formulated for the region.

Elle by Nelly De Vuyst is a certified organic line of intimate care with the purpose of regulating the pH level in the vagina to optimize comfort and feeling for women.

The pH level of the vagina is important because it informs the person of their overall health and can protect bacteria growth if at a normal level — which is a vaginal pH between 3.8 and 4.1.

'The concept was all to find a product that will be healthy and maintain a PH of 3.8 to 4.1,' Manon said.

The first product in the line, entitled Zone Control, was formulated to help in re-balancing the pH levels when someone has a yeast infection.

Although it doesn't stop Manon's daughter from ever getting another yeast infection, it does solve the problem within three days so she can go back to her regular life.

The line has since grown to feature 10 products that include cleansers, serums, toners and even a soothing mask.

There are other products on the market that promote tightening, lightening and even detoxifying the vagina.

But Manon wanted to reiterate that her line was specifically formulated to improve a woman's health and wellness, not to change the appearance of the region. The intention is to help  form a protective barrier against bacteria.

'We don’t realize that we’re infected by these fungi that are pathogenic, but that is really affecting your overall health,' she said.

Product lines from The Perfect V, Queen V, Deo Doc and Lady Suite are also popular among consumers and include items to help regulate the pH level in the vagina and cleanse the area.

These products range from a foaming cleanser, to wipes, to even an oil to help with stubborn ingrown hair women get after shaving the outer area.

The introduction of products to target ingrown hairs, like Lady Suite's Rejuvenating Botanical Oil, have grown in popularity as more and more women decide to shave their pubic hair.

These skincare products can help if there are nicks in the skin from shaving or if a rash forms from friction of wearing underwear after removing the hair.

The ultimate question, though, is do all women need to employ a multi-step regiment to keep their vagina regulated? Because often it is taught how the vagina is self sufficient and self protective.

'In a perfect world the vagina is a self-regulating system,' said Dr. Omnia Samra-Latif Estafan, a board-certified obstetrician and gynecologist.

'However when we look at it in regards to what we’re being exposed to, the vagina is near an outlet that is considered our waste disposal system,' she continued.

'We are changing the vaginal pH. We are changing what the vagina is equipped to do.'

A problem Dr. Latif cited with intimate skincare is the lack of knowledge previously about what that area might need to maintain its healthy functioning.

On the rise: The intimate skincare has boomed in recent years with the introduction of products from companies like Lady Suite (left) and Queen V (right)

Women might not realize they are impacting their vagina every day through wearing tight clothing, exercising in fitted clothing, shaving, and introducing the area to products riddled with chemicals.

'What we’ve been having on the market to what we should be doing in the intimate area — whether it's the lubricant, it’s the moisturizers, any of those things — all have chemicals [and] paraben carriers have not been really healthy for us prior to us really knowing the issues with the vagina,' she said.

It is recommended for women to consider using a cleanser and pH balancing gel free of fragrances, sulfates and parabens to maintain a healthy intimate area. But what women need for the intimate area is all dependent on their own body and if they are currently menstruating.

Dr. Latif said she tends to see an increase in women who need intimate skincare products once they reach menopause.

'One of the top, top complaints a woman has when she hits menopause is genitourinary symptoms of menopause — whether it is vaginal dryness, itchiness, [or] pain with intimacy,' Dr. Latif said.

'So when the change with the vagina and the vulva, women feel old. When we’re looking at these different products, it’s a wellness. It’s a prevention. It’s a feeling. This is to feel good.'

Dr. Latif compared the Elle products by Manon to others on the market that focus more on changing the appearance of the vagina and vulva, which is something she doesn't find is a priority for her clients.

'The most important thing is that we are maintain pH,' she said. 'You're emphasizing an acidic vaginal environment to create protection.'

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES TO A VAGINAL SKINCARE ROUTINE?

Incorporating a skincare routine with the vagina has been rather taboo with people being shy to discuss a woman's menstruation or other bodily functions down there.

But in recent years, intimate skincare has become a booming market with the addition of cleansers, serums, toners, masks and even facial options.

Experts recommend paying attention to the ingredients and what each product does for the vagina before incorporating it into any beauty routine.

The advantages, though, could greatly improve a woman's overall health and wellness.

Advantages include a healthy pH level, relief from itchiness, an improved sex life, relief from dryness, control of yeast infections, odor control, help with ingrown hairs from shaving, and creating a protective barrier to prevent entrance of any bacteria.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
