«Breaking News» 'He fought back like a champ!': Child Genius viewers go wild for come-back kid Ben McGuire

Viewers were left stunned by an amazing comeback by the Cornwall youngster in the spelling round.

People rallied behind Ben McGuire, now 13 but 12 at the time of filming, after he was able to spell lekythos among other mind-bending words, and make it into tonight's final.

At the start of the spelling round Ben found himself in the lowly position of seventh out of eight participants.

He had five points compared with the two leaders Ishal and William who had 18 and was two behind Sam directly above him.

Going into the spelling round, Ben said: 'My gut is telling me that I wont be here for the final, but I like to hope that I will.'

His father David McGuire a marketing writer and director, even said 'looking at the leaderboard - it's not likely', before adding: 'In my heart of hearts, yeah, I think he can do it.'

In order to take Sam's place in the final, Ben needed to spell six consecutive words without getting a single letter wrong - a feat never achieved in Child Genius history.

Despite looking nervy from the outset, the young man was able to spell coronach, phalanger and tessellated before drawing a sharp breath and praise from the show's presenter, Richard Osman, for pronouncing the second 'L' in the geometric word.

What do the words that Ben spelled mean?

Coronach - a traditional Scottish Gaelic funeral song or place in Canada

Phalanger - a genus of possums endemic to Papua New Guinea and Guinea

A tessellation of a flat surface is the tiling of a plane using one or more geometric shapes, called tiles, with no overlaps and no gaps. Tessellated is the past tense.

Sceuophylacium, a sacristy in the early church and in the Eastern Orthodox Church.

Sympatric - In biology, two related species or populations are considered sympatric when they exist in the same geographic area and thus frequently encounter one another.

Lekythos - a type of ancient Greek vessel used for storing oil

Included in the other words he successfully spelled was sceuophylacium - an early church room in the Eastern Orthodox Church, despite several people online believing it not to be a word at all.

Richard Osman said: I'm living every letter with you, Ben' as he nervously crawled through the spellings.

At this point Ben equalled the round's highest score but needed another correct spelling to force a tie break with a nervous-looking Sam.

Symaptric, a biological term, pulled Ben level with Sam and the word lekythos secured his place in tonight's final.

His mother said afterwards: 'I think my pulse rate is only just coming down now, I actually did feel my pulse at one point because I was a bit worried!'

She added that her son 'blew me away with his composure'.

His father David said last night after the semi-final aired: 'God, I lived all those emotions with Ben all over again. It wasn't any easier watching back on TV. Still amazed by his composure under pressure.'

Richard Osman called Ben's exploits 'terrific work' and Twitter agreed.

One user summed it up, saying: 'Wow, Ben fought back like a champ!'

Holly Michael said: 'Thoroughly impressed with Ben’s performance there. Feel like he deserves to win on that alone! Feeling #TeamBen now!!'

'Had me on the edge of my seat there Ben!!! Absolutely amazing stuff!!' added Carina Ratcliffe.

Ryan Hurst likened Ben's comeback to that of Liverpool's famous Champions League final win in Istanbul in 2005 where they came from three goals down to beat AC Milan.

He tweeted: 'Istanben! #Incrediblescenes'

'Look, quite a lot of us have been on the 'dislike-Ben' train ...but blimey does he put the work in!' added another user.

David Mackay said: 'That was incredible from Ben, 12 in a row! Held my breath the entire time!'

Child Genius: The Final airs tonight at 7pm on Channel 4.

At the start of ...

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
