«Breaking News» Bohannah and Tye Gerritsen go travelling around Australia with children in caravan

Quitting the rat race to set off on a tour around Australia with the children in tow is something many parents dream about.

Adventurous couple Bohannah, 27, and Tye Gerritsen, 30, have managed to fulfill that dream of travelling with their brood without making any spontaneous sacrifices to make their road trip a reality.

The couple decided to temporarily walk away from their suburban lifestyle and explore the country with their three young kids - four-year-old Indiana, Archer, aged two, and seven month old baby Olive - in a retro caravan.

Travelling wherever the sun takes them, the young family-of-five, from Perth Hills in Western Australia, have been living in a cosy 1981 Spaceline caravan dubbed 'Sunny' after they embarked on their holiday in July.

Speaking to Daily Mail Australia, mum Bohannah revealed what it's really like to live on the road with her children - and the reality behind their seemingly picture-perfect snaps.

Finding a vehicle to cater for their young family on the road, the couple - who document their journey via Instagram - purchased the second-hand caravan for $5,400.

'We then spent another $3,000 installing electrical brakes in the car for the caravan, as well as replacing old taillights with new and re-wiring the electrics. We also needed a new fridge for the van which cost $1,400.

'For the car, was got a bull bar for $2,700, a CB radio, spotlights for $550 and a Waeco fridge/freezer for $650.'

Seven weeks into their trip, the couple seem like they have their kids under control behind the wheel - but they do admit they have faced challenges.

'Children are incredibly resilient and surprise us in the best ways possible. Their routine has been completely flung out the window and every day we are doing something new yet they have adapted so well,' Bohannah explained.

'The biggest juggle is exploring with three children on foot. I always wear Olive in a baby carrier but the other two also love to be carried so there's often the argument between the kids of who gets to be in the other baby carrier.

'More often than not, Tye carries Archer and has Indiana riding on his shoulders. We always get the "gees you've got your hands full" comments from everyone who sees us walking by.'

'So far there have been days that are unbearably hot, humid, we've been coated in red dirt and the kids cute outfits have been stained with WD40 - a lubricant spray from when hubby was fixing the caravan door because we got locked out,' she said.

'We have stopped on the side of the road numerous times to check the wheel bearings on the caravan and even pulled over once to find the back panel of the van was hanging off.

'I've lost count of how many poo explosions Olive has done in her car seat and how often we have had to wash it. Every day we are set a new challenge which always keeps things nice and interesting.'

'At the moment our biggest cost is fuel, the last six weeks has cost us $3,100 in fuel alone,' Bohannah said.

'Caravan parks can also cost around $58 a night depending where you stay so we have downloaded the Wiki Camps app and are trying to be more cost savvy with where we choose to stay now.

'We do a weekly grocery shop but usually try to buy fresh local produce from markets or stalls on the side of the road. We are conscious to not spend lots of money on eating out or material things.'

So what have they packed in their humble caravan?

'Beans - We are lucky the kids love all sorts of beans; kidney, chickpeas, black beans, lentils - we have a huge stash as they make for really easy recipes, especially if we are low on groceries,' Bohannah said.

'Colouring books - We don't have a TV and we rarely use the iPad so colouring has been the best way to keep the kids busy when we are cooking or letting Olive have a rest and we need the kids occupied.'

The family have already clocked up more than 11,000 kilometres just seven weeks into their three-month trip.

'Tye has taken his long service leave so we would have enough time to see just half of our beautiful country,' Bohannah said, adding her husband has a fly in, fly out job.

'We've got until mid October before Tye has to be back at work so we'll be spending the next several weeks in Queensland and New South Wales before coming home.

'We are just outside of Cairns at the moment and are loving the tranquil rainforest feel. I'd really love to take the kids to New Zealand and road trip the South Island again like we did prior to having kids, I also have my eyes on Spain but we'll see.'

The couple were inspired to go travelling with their children after falling in love with New Zealand before they started a family.

'Tye and I have always loved taking road trips, whether it be short drives to the Southwest or driving around the South Island in New Zealand,' Bohannah said.

'When we started our family, the road trips continued and the idea of travelling around Australia was something we were considering.

'When we fell pregnant with Olive the idea receded a little but a few short months ago it popped back into our thoughts and so I jumped at the idea and ran with it.

'We would've loved to have gone for longer but didn't want to stay away from family for any longer with Olive still so young.'

For anyone who's keen to go travelling with their children, Bohannah said: 'You don't have to sell up your entire house to buy a van.

'This has been a whole new experience for us as we aren't familiar with camping or caravan parks and actually, had never even towed a caravan before,' she said.

'We are learning new things every day and it's certainly getting easier as we are gaining more knowledge on towing and travelling.

'You don't have to sell up your entire house to buy a van, Sunny didn't cost much (she does need a little fixing ha) but she's been a wonderful little vehicle to take us where we want to go.

'If you aren't in a position to buy, you could always hire a van and hit the road, for a month, or three, or six.

'The experience is priceless and will be the best decision you ever made. Exploring with children is probably about 90 per cent more challenging but as long as it's safe we always do lots of it.

'There's plenty of waterfalls, swimming holes and more off the beaten track and sometimes we think to ourselves "we'll give this one a miss" but then we remember that we'll most likely never see it again so we put in the extra effort and it's always worth it.

'Even if it means our legs feel like they are going to fall off from carrying an extra 40 kilos of child weight in more than 30 degree temperature.'

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
