Cameras are never meant to find an empty seat at the Oscars, with a troop of seat-fillers ready to occupy any chair vacated by a bathroom- or bar-bound celebrity.
The specially employed team of 300 extras in tuxedoes and gowns arrive hours before the show begins and are ready to swoop in and sit down once the cameras start rolling.
But last night, the apparent absence of these seat-fillers during key moments caused quite a stir as the camera was seen panning over swathes of empty seats.
Ramin Setoodeh uploaded a photograph to Twitter showing a row of empty seats at the Academy Awards last night in Hollywood
The embarrassing gaffe on the live broadcast did not go unnoticed by viewers, many of whom pointed it out on social media.
One Twitter user wrote: 'In what can only be described as a massive failure, the seat fillers are missing from the orchestra left and we see empty seats.'
Others questioned whether the extras had even shown up last night, and offered their services for next year.
But getting the gig, like so much in Hollywood, depends on who you know: Seat-fillers at the Oscars are unpaid, and must be family or friends with an employee of the Academy or accounting firm.
They must also pass a background check and are not supposed to speak unless they are spoken to.
Footage from last night's event shows two front row seats and four second row seats were empty when Black Panther triumphed in the original score category.
The seats had been occupied earlier, when Ruth E. Carter won the film's first award of the night for Costume Design.
But in the hours between the two awards, it appears the guests decided to head for the bar, and their designated seat-fillers were too slow off the mark to prevent the embarrassing mishap.
Lady Gaga, who won the award for Best Song, reportedly required two seat-fillers to tag-team to take her place when she left her chair and during her performance of 'Shallow' with Bradley Cooper.
The seat-fillers were blamed for an awkward moment at the Oscars last night where the camera panned over empty seats on the front row
Viewers pointed out the failure of the seat-fillers last night and many offered their services at the ceremony next year

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
