«Breaking News» Tui is the most eco-friendly airline, Virgin and BA are among the worst for pollution

Tui is the most eco-friendly airline in the world while Virgin Atlantic and British Airways are among the worst for pollution, according to a new report.

German organisation Atmosfair has rated 125 airlines from around the globe based on carbon emissions, calculated using aircraft type in fleets, engines, winglets, seating and freight capacity, as well as load factors.

The worst performing airline overall according to the study is South African Airlink, while the most eco-friendly in the US is Alaska Airlines and worst for carbon emissions in the US is Envoy Air, a subsidiary of American Airlines.

Tui, formerly Thomson Airways, was praised in the report for flying highly efficient aircraft such as the Boeing 737-800 and for seating being at almost maximum capacity combined with very high occupancy rates.

It narrowly beat Brazilian-based Latam Airlines, which is rated second best and China West Air, which is third.

Tui's German counterpart, Tuifly,  comes in fourth and French-based Transavia.com is fifth.

British Airways, which has the biggest fleet in the UK, comes 74th out of 125 airlines

HOW THE EMISSIONS RANKING WAS PRODUCED

The Atmosfair Airline Index (AAI) individually compares greenhouse gas emissions of 190 of the largest airlines in the world and evaluates their carbon efficiency, according to a statement.

It said: 'Overall, the AAI captures about 92 per cent of worldwide air traffic, which includes 33 million flights around the globe.

'The current calculations are based on the latest available data on worldwide aviation from 2016. In the AAI, every airline can score between 0 and 100 efficiency points, broken down into short, medium, and long flight distances.'

The statement continued: 'This allows passengers to compare airlines when planning a flight and choose the airline with the lowest carbon emissions on their desired route. This is particularly interesting for companies with many business trips which, in the best case, not only reduce their carbon footprint, but also their travel costs.

'The AAI is based on the carbon emissions of a given airline per kilometer and passenger on all routes flown. The carbon emissions are calculated using the aircraft type, engines, use of winglets (aerodynamic wingtips), seating and freight capacity as well as the occupancy on every single flight.

'The data sources only include international organizations such as ICAO and IATA and a number of specialized data services of the aviation industry as well as computer models by aircraft engineers.'

The rest of the top ten is made up of SunExpress Turkei (sixth), Thomas Cook Airlines (seventh), Air Europa Express (eighth), Condor Flugdienst (ninth) and China-based Juneyao Airlines (10th).

British Airways, which has the biggest fleet in the UK, comes 74th out of 125 while Virgin Atlantic fares even worse, coming in at 83rd place.

Flybe is 98th and the worst-ranked UK-based airline is BA CityFlyer in 102nd place.

Among the US airlines, Alaska Airlines is 22nd in the ranking, Delta Air Lines is 45th, United Airlines is 50th and American Airlines is 58th. Envoy Air came 122nd.

Virgin Australia International is 18th on the overall list, while Australian flag carrier Qantas is 49th.

The report states that carbon emissions among airlines remain at a constant level, but Dietrich Brockhagen, managing director of Atmosfair, explained that more needs to be done.

He said: 'Our results show that the efficiency improvements of the vast majority of airlines worldwide is not sufficient.

'We need new, synthetic and CO2-neutral fuels and other more radical measures to curb CO2 emissions in the sector.'

Meanwhile the report also suggests that airlines with new aircraft such as the Boeing 787-9, Airbus A350-900 or the A320neo in their fleets can achieve better eco-efficiency.

It read: 'These new aircraft models considerably raise the bar in terms of carbon efficiency. Airlines that have not updated their fleets or have only made slight improvements have lost ground in the current AAI ranking.'

It also suggest that passengers can do their bit to improve carbon emissions by choosing train travel wherever possible or booking direct flights over those with stopovers.

In response to the report, British Airways said: 'We are committed to reducing our carbon emissions and have improved efficiency by more than 10 per cent since 2008. We are well on course to deliver a 25 per cent improvement in carbon emissions reduction by 2025.

'British Airways is the first airline in Europe to invest in building a plant to generate renewable jet fuel from household waste, and last week we kicked off a research project with some of the UK's leading universities to find a way to power a long-haul aircraft with 300 customers on board with zero emissions.

'We are also investing heavily in modern, fuel-efficient aircraft, including the 787, A380 and A350, and by 2020 will have received more than 100 new aircraft in a decade.'

A spokesman for Virgin Atlantic said: 'We question the validity of this report as it doesn't use actual emissions data, and makes assumptions about an airline's efficiency based on the type of aircraft operated – excluding other crucial carbon reducing factors.

'We are committed to reducing our carbon emissions, and have invested in a massive renewal programme to replace our entire fleet over a 10 year period. By switching from four-engine aircraft to more efficient two-engine aircraft we have reduced our aircraft carbon emissions by 23.7 per cent since 2007. Our carbon emissions will continue to reduce as we take delivery of more new A350 -1000 aircraft over the next three years.

'We are also working on innovative fuel solutions – including a pioneering low carbon jet fuel partnership with LanzaTech, which is on the verge of commercial production. This will deliver up to 70 per cent carbon reduction compared to traditional jet fuel, and will be a significant breakthrough in aviation's carbon reduction journey.'

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
