President Donald Trump on Tuesday wished U.S. troops stationed around the country and the world a merry Christmas, but only after making them wait for a video conference while they stared at his empty chair.
When he did take his seat he quickly thanked the troops for their service and then immediately went onto to talk about the government shutdown and his desire to get the US- Mexico border wall built.
After being greeted by a lieutenant colonel in Guam who wished him a merry Christmas, Trump responded, 'Well, I want to wish everybody a really Merry Christmas, a Happy New Year. Just remember: the people in our country, we're very proud of you. The country is doing well. We have a little bit of a shut down because we believe in walls and we believe in borders and we believe in barriers.'
'And, you know, we have a special country; people have to come in through the legal process, not just walk in. We have no idea who they are. And we're stopping drugs at a record rate, but we need some help and the help is the wall, we need a wall to help us. Otherwise, they just flow through no matter what you do,' Trump continued.
Trump went on to speak about the migrant caravans traveling from Guatemala through Mexico hoping to seek asylum in the United States.
The US military members around the world waited patiently on the president who was to deliver a Christmas thank you to them for their service
Trump was greeted with a happy holidays from the troops to which he responded about the country being proud of them and went immediately into the government shutdown and re-stated his desire to get his wall built
The president switched gears from thanking the troops to talking about the government shutdown and complaining about not having his border wall
Trump made sure to speak about the government shutdown while speaking with the US military members stationed around the world during his Christmas day video conference with them in which he briefly thanked them for their service
'We had caravans of people coming up, you've been seeing it. And we stopped them, and we stopped him cold and they're heading back. For the most part, they're heading back or they're staying in Mexico.'
'But I will...I will tell you, I know the work you do, and it's been amazing and it's great. I will see you all. I know I'll meet you all. I'll see you all. But on behalf of the country, Merry Christmas! Happy New Year! Keep doing the job, we're all very proud of you. Nobody can do what you do.'
Trump spoke by video conference to members of all five branches of the U.S. military.
The president is spending a rare Christmas in Washington because of a stalemate with Congress that left several government departments and agencies shuttered since the weekend, affecting the livelihoods of some 800,000 federal employees.
Trump usually spends Christmas at his Florida estate. He scrapped plans to travel to Palm Beach because of the shutdown.
'I thought it would be wrong for me to be with my family,' he told reporters in the Oval Office after the give and take with members of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard from their stations in Guam, Bahrain, Qatar and Alaska.

President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump attended a Christmas Eve service at the National Cathedral, Monday
'My family is in Florida, Palm Beach, and I just didn't want to go down and be there when other people are hurting,' Trump said. He didn't say which family members were at the Mar-a-Lago estate.
Trump and his wife, first lady Melania Trump, had an active Christmas Eve.
They answered telephone calls from children who wanted to know where Santa was on his gift-giving journey, with the president at one point asking a seven-year-old named Coleman, 'Are you still a believer in Santa?' Trump listened for a moment before adding, 'Because at seven, it's marginal, right?'
Reporters in the room could only hear Trump's end of the conversation during the NORAD Tracks Santa program. The program became a Christmas Eve tradition after a child mistakenly called the forerunner to the North American Aerospace Defense Command in 1955 and asked to speak to Santa.
It was not affected by the shutdown because it's staffed by volunteers at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado using pre-approved funding.
The Trumps later attended religious services at Washington National Cathedral. He and the first lady usually attend Christmas Eve services at the Episcopal church in Palm Beach where they were married in 2005.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
