«Breaking News» These are the five surprising ways overindulging at Christmas can affect your skin

Christmas is usually the time that all of the healthy habits you've worked on building throughout the year fall by the wayside.

But while you might be fearful of gaining a few extra kilos or having to battle a dreaded hangover, it's worth noting what can happen to your skin during this time.

From dullness to dehydration nutritional therapist Eve Kalinik, who works at Young LDN, claims these are the culprits behind why your complexion is looking puffy and sallow.

CAUSES DEHYDRATION

At this time of year, alcohol consumption tends to increase, whilst water consumption decreases, which can often leave skin looking and feeling dry and thirsty.

'Where possible try to stick to the "one for one" rule when you are out, i.e. after every alcoholic drink consume one full glass of water,' Ms Kalinik said.

'This can sometimes be easier said than done but I often find that opting for sparkling water can make this easier.

'I would also recommend scheduling in a few alcohol-free nights over the festive season and drinking plenty of water throughout the holidays.

'For ease and convenience, why not keep a large jug of filtered water on your desk at work or in your kitchen at home? If you find it hard to consume plain water, try adding delicious, festive inspired ingredients such as cinnamon, orange slices and/or herbs such as rosemary or mint.'

CAUSES A LACK OF SLEEP AND YOUR SKIN CAN'T REPAIR

Dark circles can be more visible during Christmas and are often linked to lack of or poor-quality sleep.

'Those late nights can soon add up and it's not sensible to bank them up for one major lie in as your body needs to rest,' she explained.

'Take advantage of those alcohol-free nights you scheduled and use them as an opportunity to have an earlier bedtime and maximise on your zzz's.

'This is when the body repairs, regenerates and that crucially includes the skin.

'Download a sleeping app to help regulate your sleeping schedule and be mindful of your pre-bedtime ritual, this should include: switching off the blue light devices at least an hour before bed and instead read, write in a journal, meditate, soak in the bath, or whatever it is that allows your body to wind down.'

CAUSES HORMONE SPIKES THAT LEAD TO BREAKOUTS

Christmas parties and festive canapes generally lead to an increased consumption of highly refined foods and less vegetable intake overall.

'When we add in the ubiquitous mulled wine and bubbles, this can impact hormone levels which in turn, can lead to unwanted breakouts on the skin,' Ms Kalinik explained.

'Try to combat this by ordering a side of greens when you are out for Christmas meals.

'Vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, kale and cabbage can help support hormone balancing and keep skin feeling healthier.

'On the nights you are staying in, consider making your meals plant-based so you can increase your veggie quota even further.'

'We often overindulge on sugary snacks when stressed or anxious so try to schedule in some restorative activities that can help you to relax,' she said

IMPAIRS COLLAGEN PRODUCTION

Skin can tend to look and feel a little less glowing and bouncy over the festive period and this can often be due to an increase in sugar consumption which can contribute to an increase in the process of glycation.

'This is a normal process but when it is accelerated this can impair collagen production and repair, which over time, can leave skin prone to ageing and sagging,' she said.

'Short term, too much sugar can affect the body's sebum production, leaving skin looking dull.

'Of course, the odd treat here and there is fundamentally part of having a healthy attitude to eating but be mindful if you are about to tuck into that third mince pie in a row.

'We often overindulge on sugary snacks when stressed or anxious so try to schedule in some restorative activities that can help you to relax, such as daily meditation, simple breathing exercises, a walk outdoors or even listening to some inspiring music or a podcast can all help.'

CAUSES RASHES

Rashes and reactions on the skin are often linked to poor gut health.

'This can be compromised by a myriad of factors over the festive period including a lack of fibre, increased stress and late nights,' she said.

'Consider taking a good quality probiotic, increase water intake, and mix the indulgence with plenty of fibre, to help mitigate this and have your gut firing on all cylinders as you move into the New Year.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
