«Breaking News» Now 26,000 people pledge 1.5m hours to helping the NHS in Daily Mail's Christmas campaign

It truly is the season of goodwill – 26,000 big-hearted volunteers have promised to work almost 1.5million hours for the NHS in the Mail’s Hospital Helpforce campaign.

The new total came after the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall gave their backing to the campaign – saying it would make a ‘real difference’.

The biggest British volunteer recruitment drive since the 2012 Olympics in London has increased the number of helpers in the NHS by more than a third.

The Mail’s campaign, in partnership with the charity Helpforce, has won the hearts of stars such as J K Rowling, Joanna Lumley and Sir Cliff Richard.

Sir Tom Hughes-Hallett, founder and chairman of Helpforce, said: ‘It’s wonderful and humbling to see so many people giving the gift of time during this season. This generosity embodies the spirit of Christmas and shows the enormous compassion that exists across the United Kingdom.’

So far 26,338 volunteers have signed up to help out at hospitals, with more than 15,000 pledging three hours a week of their time.

Another 11,207 will help out for one day a month. That all adds up to a grand total of 1,492,884 hours over six months.

Volunteers are desperately needed as hospitals struggle to cope with the ageing population.

They will carry out simple tasks to make patients’ lives easier such as taking them to an appointment or making notes during it.

Former patients can sign up to mentor others or offer a hand to hold for people without family members in their final hours.

Simon Stevens, chief executive of NHS England, has said if enough people gave up their time, ‘patients would never need to be in hospital alone’.

The Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Rev Justin Welby, said as little as three hours a week could have a profound impact on patients’ lives.

Readers can register their interest by filling out a form online before being matched with an NHS trust – with placements likely to start in the spring following checks.

Studies have shown volunteers can help patients feel emotionally and physically healthier.

Experts say the act of being a volunteer could help to ward off dementia by providing valuable mental stimulation.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
