«Breaking News» Miss Universe contestants compete in swimsuit competition after xenophobia controversy

Miss USA, Miss Australia, and Miss Colombia looked confident as they strutted down the runway during the Miss Universe preliminary swimsuit competition after being accused of xenophobia for mocking contestants who don't speak English at the pageant, where 94 nationalities are represented.

Miss USA Sarah Rose Summers, 24, has been compared to Mean Girls villain Regina George after she was filmed calling out Miss Cambodia Rern Sinat and Miss Vietnam H'Hen Nie in an Instagram Live session on Miss Colombia Valeria Morales' account.

Miss Colombia, 20, and Miss Australia Francesca Hung, 24, were both took part in the conversation, and the international backlash has been swift, with the competition just days away.

Miss USA, Miss Colombia, and Miss Australia have come under fire for mocking Miss Cambodia Rern Sinat and Miss Vietnam H'Hen Nie for their English

But despite the controversy, all three women managed to plaster bright smiles on their faces as they took the stage at during the preliminary round in Bangkok, Thailand.

Miss USA opted for a bikini with a dark orange top and light orange bottoms, while Miss Colombia and Miss Australia both wore one-pieces featuring stomach cutouts.

Miss Cambodia and Miss Vietnam also put their games faces on and looked just as confident when they took the stage on Thursday.

The preliminaries came on the heals of Miss USA, Miss Australia, and Miss Colombia getting slammed for gossiping about their fellow contestants on Instagram Live.

The footage shows Miss USA kicking off the conversation by asking her fellow contestants: 'What do you think of Miss Vietnam Nie?'

They agree she is 'cute' and Sarah adds that 'she pretends to know so much English and then you ask her a question after having a whole conversation with her and she goes [nods and smiles].'

Sarah lets out a laugh before saying: 'She's adorable.'

Valeria asks her, 'How?' prompting Sarah to do the imitation for a second time.

They also chat about what they think of Miss Cambodia Rern Sinat, with Sarah noting that no one at the event speaks her language.

'Miss Cambodia is here and doesn't speak any English, and not a single other person speaks her language. Can you imagine?' the 24-year-old from Omaha, Nebraska, asked.

'Francesca [Miss Australia] said that it would be so isolating, and I said, "Yes,"' she added. 'I mean just confusing all the time.'

The tone-deaf comments came despite the ongoing pageant being held in Thailand, a country in Southeast Asia where English is not a common language and generally seen as a privilege gained through going to expensive schools.

Miss USA then says, 'Poor Cambodia,' after Miss Australia mentions how hard it must be for the non-English speaking contestants who are relying on Google Translate and professional translators at the event.

Miss USA turns to Miss Colombia and and notes: 'You at least speak pretty good English,' before Miss Australia interjects, 'and you have your Spanish.'

Miss Colombia then mentions how fellow Latino Miss Brazil also can't speak English, but Miss USA points out 'there are other women who speak Portuguese.'

An anonymous source inside the pageant told The Post: 'Actually, Miss Cambodia and Miss Australia are friends,' before adding that Miss Cambodia was hurt by the incident.

The popular Instagram account Diet Prada, which has recently called out several controversies in the fashion world, reacted to the incident and shared a message to its 986,000 followers likening Miss USA to Mean Girls character Regina George.

'Regina George, is that you? This is basically like the most dramatic reality show, but condensed into 1 minute lol. @sarahrosesummers hopefully will prove that ignorance will not win you a @missuniverse title...whatever that means these days,' reads the post.

'This is basically what normalized xenophobia looks like. If she's trying to show empathy, the condescending, intolerant tone tells a different story.

'A reminder that you're participating in a competition in a country/continent where English is NOT the primary language.'

The page also compared the pageant to a 'gossip ring of toxic mean girl behavior.' The post has been liked more than 34,000 times and Miss USA and Miss Australian have blocked the account.

Reacting on Facebook, Cambodian-American woman Sorany Var said: 'If I have EVER come across the entitlement and superiority of white Americans, this is it right here.

'In the greater context of things, I don’t think Miss USA realized she was being bigoted and condescending, but that’s what entitlement does - it only allows you to see from YOUR narrow perspective.'

She added that if Miss Cambodia and Miss Vietnam were so isolated, the three women should have invited them to join their trio.

Twitter users weighed in on the debate with some even asking for the accused contestants to be removed from the competition.

'@MissUniverse i wonder if you will still allow Miss USA, Columbia, and Australia to continue in the competition after their racist/ bigoted remarks toward fellow contestant Miss Cambodia. I can't believe these ladies will be representing their countries,' wrote Damien DL Johnson on Twitter.

Miss Australia, who is half Chinese, posted a photograph on Instagram of herself with the Cambodian contestant, claiming the whole situation has been 'misconstrued.'

'I'm so upset that this situation has been misconstrued like this … We were merely saying it must be even more difficult at times not to have a single other delegate being able to speak [Khmer] … which in fact, makes Nat [Miss Cambodia] an even stronger contender [to win the title],' Francesca wrote.

Miss USA's mother, Desiree, also claimed her daughter Sarah's comments were taken out of context.

'She in no way meant any harm. She doesn’t have a mean bone in her body,' Desiree told TMZ

The mom also claimed that Sarah was just recreating how Miss Vietnam acts when she doesn't understand what someone was saying. She insisted her daughter wasn't trying to mock her.

Troy Barbagallo, director of Pink Tank Events, which runs the Miss Universe Australia Pageant, told 9Honey that the situation has almost amounted to bullying against the accused.

'Regarding the incident, we have spoken the girls involved and MUO management. The bullying accusations are unfounded and almost bullying against the accused,' he wrote.

'The comments were taken completely out of context with the girls merely chatting sympathetically re the difficulty facing Miss Cambodia as the only participant who has no one else in the competition who speaks her language.'

He assured the Australian website that there were no hard feelings between the women ahead of the pageant's final, which takes place on December 17.

The Miss Universe Organization has been contacted for comment.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
