«Breaking News» Did dried-out Christmas tree spark killer fire?

A Christmas tree may have sparked a fire which tore through a family home and killed a mother and her two young children, it was revealed today.

Justine Collison, 33, and her daughter Isabella, eight, died in a blaze in Collingham, near Newark, Nottinghamshire on Saturday.

Her son Harvey, five, was taken to hospital in a serious condition but police confirmed he passed away in hospital yesterday.

Friends say the children's father and Justine's husband Gavin Collison, 34, who remains fighting for his life in hospital, has 'had his world ripped away from him'.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation but neighbours fear it might have been 'candles or Christmas lights' and reported seeing flames coming from the conservatory of the home.

They suggested the lights could have sparked the fire after the family's Christmas tree dropped its needles.

PRIMARY SCHOOL PAYS TRIBUTE TO BROTHER AND SISTER

In a moving statement Helen Richardson, Izzy and Harvey's headteacher at John Blow Primary School in Collingham, paid a heartfelt tribute to the siblings.

She said: 'Izzy was a gentle and caring girl who will be deeply missed by all who knew her. She adored her younger brother Harvey, frequently asking at playtime if she and a friend could go and check if he was settling into school.

'Held in high regard by the rest of her class, Izzy was quiet and unassuming, but this did not stop her from putting her all into everything she did. She enjoyed music, dance and drama which enabled her to express her sense of fun and the creative side of her personality.

'Harvey had only recently joined our school, starting in our reception class. He was very creative, always making models in the craft corner.

'He was always kind and caring: only last week he made a handbag out of cardboard boxes for his mum, because she was always mislaying her phone.

'Harvey was a lovely, friendly child, and he will be very much missed by us all.

'It has been a privilege to know and share in Izzy and Harvey's lives, so unexpectedly cut short and they will remain with warm fondness in our hearts forever.

'We are working with the County Council to provide specialist support to any children who need it to help them cope with their grief.'

Izzy and Harvey's school today paid a heartfelt tribute to the siblings.

The headteacher at their primary school said last week Harvey had made his mother a handbag out of cardboard 'because she was always mislaying her phone.'

Their grandmother and Mrs Collison's mother Diane Fletcher, 53, was successfully evacuated from the building on Woodhill Road without injury.

It is not yet clear if Mr Collison has been told the terrible news.

The 'lovely' family had moved into the £350,000 house 18 months ago, neighbours said.

Ms Collison, a teaching assistant at a special needs school, and Mr Collison, an engineer at a nearby RAF base, had been in the process of refurbishing the four-bedroom house.

The parents regularly posted photographs of their children alongside social media and just less than one week ago, Mrs Collison updated her Facebook picture to a photo of Harvey and Izzy enjoying ice creams on the beach together.

Earlier this year Mr Collison shared a picture of with the caption: 'A few holiday highlights from our family trip to London. Oh so tiring but worth it! #familylove.'

Neighbours have paid tribute to Mrs Collison who they say was 'always smiling' and 'idolised' her children.

Cath Hardy, 58, worked with mother-of-two Mrs Collison at Kisimul School in Swinderby. She said: 'You couldn't meet a nicer woman.

'She adored her children and husband, absolutely idolised them.

'I will remember her with fondness, always laughing and joking.

'She was really looking forward to Christmas.

'It's absolutely heartbreaking. As for Gavin - there are no words.

'He's lost his wife and two children. His world has been taken away from him.'

Neighbours said they had not been told what the suspected cause of the fire was.

'At this time of year it could be candles, or Christmas lights,' said one. 'It is just such a tragedy. I can't comprehend it.'

Nottinghamshire Police area chief inspector Rich Stapleford yesterday confirmed little Harvey had passed away in hospital.

He said: 'Tragically a boy, five, who was rescued from the house and taken to hospital has died.

'This follows the news that a girl aged eight and a woman aged 33 died following the incident.

'A 34-year-old man remains in hospital in a serious condition.

'Our thoughts are with the victims, their families, friends and the community of Collingham at this difficult time.'

The house remained cordoned off on Sunday afternoon as a joint investigation by Nottinghamshire Police and Fire and Rescue began.

Neighbours described how the 'traumatised' Ms Fletcher was seen exiting the blaze 'in a complete daze but without a scratch', The Sun reported.

It is believed Ms Fletcher lived with the family and often looked after the children.

Diane Norton said the tragedy was 'heartbreaking' and 'so desperately sad just before Christmas.'

Her husband Paul and son Elliot had tried to alert the sleeping family to the blaze after seeing their conservatory engulfed in flames at around 7am.

Mr Norton, 57, described seeing a 'glow' from the house after looking out of his landing window.

He told Lincolnshire Live: 'It looked like the conservatory was on fire. There was lots of smoke. I shouted up to Elliot, my son, and we called the fire brigade straight away.

'We went to the front door and we were banging on the windows. Then we went round the back door.'

Mr Norton and his son were still trying to enter the property when the first fire engine arrived.

He said firefighters doused the flames with water before entering the property with breathing apparatus.

Harvey's pre-school teacher Rachael Walker, 48, said the tragedy will 'will hit the community really hard.'

She said: 'I taught Harvey at pre-school. He just left in July to start at the local infant school.

'He was a real character, a really jolly little boy. He was always making things, which might have been something to do with his dad's job.

'It is going to be incredibly difficult for the children at school.

'Harvey had just started there and Izzy was in Year Four. I don't know how they will cope. I hope something will be put in place for them. But I don't know how you go about explaining that to four and five year olds.'

Ms Walker added: 'As for what started it, we have no idea. I heard it started in the conservatory. At this time of year it could be candles, or Christmas lights.

'It is just such a tragedy. I can't comprehend it.'

Friends, family and neighbours paid tribute to the family as they arrived at the home to lay notes, flowers and stuffed toys on Sunday.

One tribute, from Daniel, read: 'To Harvey, I am so proud to call you my buddy partner.

'I loved reading with you.'

Neighbour Dave Pearce, 70, added: 'They were a very popular family. The children were always very happy. It's so sad.'

Another local, who asked not to be named, said: 'They were a wonderful family. The children were so polite. I don't know how Gavin will ever get over this.

'He's lost everything.'

Christine Hasman, administrator for East Trent Churches, said All Saints Church will open during the day from now until Christmas for people to remember the family.

She said: 'All I can say is that everybody who knows about it in the church community is shocked and saddened by the whole thing.

'It's just shocking news, especially so close to Christmas.'

Robert Jenrick, the MP for Newark, said: 'My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of those who died in Collingham today - and with those being cared for in hospital.

'As we approach Christmas, a family devastated by an horrific fire reminds us all of those we love and care for and the fragility of life.'

Conservative councillor David Clarke, who represents Collingham on Newark and Sherwood District Council, said: 'The majority of people will be extremely shocked certainly.

'It's a fairly close knit community. I do not know the people that live there. I am sure it will impact on them and they will be traumatised by it.'

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
