«Breaking News» Commuters are hit by delays and cancellations on South Western Railway

Rail commuters faced yet more disruption this morning after a signalling problem caused chaos on routes into London Waterloo.

Long-suffering South Western Railway passengers faced delays and cancellations in and out of Britain's busiest railway station due to the issues at Woking in Surrey.

Disruption on the beleaguered network was estimated to last until at least midday, with lines blocked, trains diverted and some services delayed by up to an hour.

Passengers, including those who have paid almost £3,600 for a season ticket from Woking to Waterloo, were left waiting outside at stations for information in the cold.

Vodafone worker Ker Anderson, a father-of-three from Thatcham, Berkshire, tweeted: 'Another day, another day of chaos on South Western Railways.

'Stuck at Basingstoke and nobody knows when or if I'm ever going to get to London! #shambolicservice.'

Stephanie Brogan from Southampton added: 'Why was there no information about the problems at Woking when I left my station this morning, South Western Railway?

'Help, now stuck outside Winchester as no platforms available at Basingstoke and no heating.'

And City worker Andrew Potter joked: 'Put South Western Railway in charge of Brexit. Will be cancelled within the hour.'

Trains could only run from platforms three and five at Woking today, with passengers trying to get to Waterloo told to use platform three.

Services from Weymouth, Poole, Bournemouth and Southampton will run via Havant and Guildford – and West of England services will start and terminate at Basingstoke.

Tickets were being accepted at no extra cost on Great Western Railway and Cross Country services from Basingstoke to Reading.

They were also valid on GWR trains from Reading to London Paddington, and London Underground services between Paddington and Waterloo.

An SWR spokesman said: 'Earlier this morning, there was a signalling problem in the Woking area. Network Rail have now rectified the fault.

'All lines have now reopened however trains and crew have been displaced by this incident so trains residual cancellations, delays or revisions to services will occur.'

SWR - which has been hit by a series of delays in recent weeks because of signal and train failures - runs services into Waterloo, which handles 270,000 journeys a day.

Senior managers from Network Rail and SWR will be at Waterloo station concourse this Thursday from 4pm to 7.30pm to answer questions from commuters.

And it comes days after members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union on SWR said they will walk out on December 22, causing travel misery for festive shoppers.

The strike is part of the long-running dispute over guards on trains, which the union says is about 'safety, security and access' - but SWR billed it 'totally unnecessary'.

Meanwhile, Transport for London said yesterday that the new Crossrail line may be delayed further and could require a £2billion funding boost.

TfL added that 'more work is required than had been envisaged' when a revised opening date of autumn 2019 was given in August.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
