«Breaking News» Trump pardons Peas the turkey after it wins online poll against rival Carrots

President Donald Trump pardoned Peas the Thanksgiving turkey on Tuesday in a ceremony filled with tongue-in-cheek jokes about vote counting, recounts, subpoenas and judicial power.

'I am pleased to announce that today's lucky bird and guest of honor is named Peas along with his alternate named Carrots,' Trump said with first lady Melania Trump at his side.

'The winner of this vote was decided by a fair and open election conducted on the White House website. This was a fair election. Unfortunately Carrots refused to concede and demanded a recount and we are fighting with Carrots. We have come to a conclusion. Carrots, I'm sorry to tell you the result did not change. Too bad for Carrots.'

The president also got in a few jokes about the recent midterm election, which saw Democrats win control of the House of Representatives and the state of Florida undergo a lengthy recount process.

'Even though Peas and Carrots have received a presidential pardon, I have warned them that House Democrats are likely to issue them both subpoenas,' he said in reference to the investigations of his administration that are expended to happen next year.

'None the less in the spirit of Thanksgiving, I will be issuing both Peas and Carrots a presidential pardon. Unfortunately I can't guarantee that they won't be enjoined by the ninth circuit. Always happens. They are guaranteed. All joking aside, this is a time for Americans to unite together,' the president said.

Melania Trump, dressed in a Dior jacket, didn't speak as she watched her husband dispense in the annual tradition.

After his speech, the first couple approached a table and watched as a handler lifted Peas onto the table.

Trump raised his hand over the bird in Charlton Heston parting-of-the-Red-Sea fashion.

'Peas, I hereby grant you a full pardon,' he said, earning laughter and applause.

Trump gave the bird a little pat, thanked the crowd and departed.

The Marine Band played 'God Bless America' as he walked back toward the Oval Office.

First daughter Ivanka Trump, husband Jared Kushner and their three children joined the annual festivities, which help kick off the holiday season at the White House.

It was her first public appearance since The Washington Post revealed her use of  private email to conduct White House business.

Her and the children checked out one birds before the ceremony began.

The turkeys are the first from South Dakota to be given a presidential pardon.

Peas is 30 inches high, weighs 39 pounds, and likes to eat popcorn, according to the White House.

Carrots is 32 inches high, weighs 41 pounds and prefers to snack on M&Ms.

This year’s presentation marks the 71st anniversary of a tradition that has continued now through 13 successive administrations.

The tradition got a pre-game warmup on Tuesday with a briefing room visit by one of the white birds.

Press aides refused to say whether the visitor was 'Peas' or 'Carrots,' the pair of birds chosen from a flock of 50 to compete in an online poll – whose winner gets Trump's clemency and a lifetime of ease at a Virginia Tech University agriculture research center.

Photographers made 'gobble' noises. One reporter shouted a question to the bird about whether it had promised anything in exchange for his pardon.

The turkey was too short for the podium that Press Secretary Sarah Sanders usually occupies, and eventually offered only its signature sound.

This is the first year the presidential turkeys, furnished by the National Turkey Federation, came from a grower in South Dakota. Ruben Waldner, whose farm is near the town of Huron, brought them.

The turkey trade group said Waldner prepared them for the pressures of the White House 'from an early age by acclimating the turkeys to the sounds of a crowd, bright camera lights and standing comfortably on a table.'

But first came the harsh lights of the briefing room that used to host Sean Spicer and now is Sanders' occasional haunt.

Jeff Sven, the NTF's chairman, accompanied the fowl and coaxed it out of a carrying crate with a 'Come on, buddy!'

After some wing-stretching and a cascade of camera-shutter noises, its four-minute visit quickly ended. but not until it took a few steps away from the cage.

'Come on, buddy,' Sveen said again.

The presidential turkey pardoning tradition goes back to 1947, when Harry S. Truman was president. Thirteen successive administrations have taken part.

This year's two birds, one of which will officially serve as the 'alternate,' were originally named Jeff and Ruben before the White House rechristened them.

The turkeys spent Monday night at the Willard intercontinental Hotel near the White House, shedding feathers on the floor and nesting on a bed of wood chips.

Neither turkey will find itself dressed with stuffing. They will both end up at 'Gobbler's Rest' on Virginia Tech's campus in Blacksburg, Virginia, living out their lives with visitors and veterinary care.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
