British factories producing cheap throwaway clothes – including £3 dresses – are blocking inspections, bullying and underpaying staff, MPs were told yesterday.
Allegations of serious intimidation were revealed during evidence to an inquiry into waste and exploitation in the ‘fast fashion’ industry. The environmental audit committee was taking evidence from bosses at online clothing giants Missguided, Boohoo and ASOS.
MPs from all parties are concerned that the firms are encouraging people to buy throwaway fashions which are so cheap that no charity shop will accept them.

Committee chairman, Labour MP Mary Creagh, told The Daily Telegraph: ‘Charity shops can’t be the dumping ground for the high street’s little secret – much of what they take they can’t sell because of the quality, and it’s very difficult to recycle the fibres.
‘They are turning it away as they can’t sell it, so fabric either goes to Europe or the developing world. It’s disrupting markets in other countries.’
Most of the companies rely on factories in Leicester to supply the clothes, alongside others in China, Pakistan and some parts of Eastern Europe.
A senior executive at Missguided said some clothing factories refused to be inspected or answer questions, raising concerns they are exploiting staff and paying below the minimum wage. Paul Smith told MPs the company had dramatically scaled back the number of suppliers and factories it used in Leicester because it became too difficult to police them.

Suppliers are required to sign a code of conduct, promising to pay the minimum wage and ensure staff are treated properly. But Mr Smith this was difficult to enforce and members of his team had been threatened.
He added: ‘Two members of the Missguided team in the past 18 months have been threatened or actually physically assaulted in Leicester by factory owners because they did not want us to enter their premises.
‘These were people who were not manufacturing for us, but we were scoping them out and they did not like the questions we were asking.’
Asked what he thought the factory bosses had to hide, he said: ‘Underpayment of workers is usual.’

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
