Staff at the company responsible for blocking Iceland’s Christmas advert have faced a torrent of abuse since the decision, their boss has revealed.

The advert features a cartoon orangutan and highlights the destruction of rainforests for palm oil production.

Clearcast, which checks adverts against the industry code before they are broadcast, has had to remove pictures of employees on its website after they were posted on Twitter, leading to fears for their safety.

The company has also closed its Facebook page indefinitely.

Clearcast told Iceland’s advertising agency last month it could not clear its commercial, which was produced by Greenpeace, because it ‘fell foul of the rule on political advertisers’.

Clearcast’s Chris Mundy said that after the decision it had received a ‘deluge of contact’. ‘Unfortunately, this included a substantial amount of abuse and resulted in the team feeling threatened,’ he added.

He said it was wrong to claim Clearcast had banned the ad, as it was not a regulator, but ‘the winner has been the environmental message that has been widely shared – if that changes behaviour, that is a good thing’.

Iceland followed up its planned advertising campaign with an animatronic orangutan taking to the streets

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
