«Breaking News» Bryan Ferry's ex-wife Lucy Birley killed herself with shotgun, coroner finds

Lucy Birley, the ex-wife of singer Bryan Ferry, took her own life by shooting herself at her brother's B&B, a coroner has found.

The 58-year-old mother of four died from a self-inflicted gun shot wound at the hotel at New Quay, west Ireland last July, a coroner's court in Ennis heard.

The former model and society heiress married Bryan Ferry in 1982 and they divorced in 2003.

The couple had four sons together, Otis, Isaac, Tara and Merlin, and Ms Birley remarried in 2006 to businessman Robin Birley.

Coroner Isobel O'Dea told the inquest: 'I am satisfied that Lucy took her own life. She left notes there.'

In her evidence, Garda officer Cathy Burke told the inquest that she found the shot-gun and cartridges along with several notes found in the room.

Ms Birley, understood to have lived in Shropshire, arrived at her brother, Mark Helmore's, B&B, on July 20. Three days later she was found dead.

Hotel employee Caroline McNamara said she found Ms Birley's body wrapped in a duvet on the floor of her bedroom at around 10.50pm.

Ms Birley had brought her three dogs, Daisy, Peg and Daphne, which were heard barking shortly before she was found dead.

Ms McNamara said that, after seeing a body wrapped in a duvet, she called out Lucy's name and there was no answer.

Her brother, Mr Helmore, was away at the time and got a friend, Douglas Culligan, to go around, the inquest heard.

He said: 'I put the back of my hand to the sole of her foot and it was stone cold.'

Mr Culligan then phoned emergency services and Mr Helmore, to inform him of the tragic news.

He said of Ms Birley: 'She lived in England but she used to come over here with the kids.'

Ms McNamara was on the phone to Lucy's brother, Mark Helmore at the time and Mr Helmore asked long-time friend, Douglas Culligan to go to the house.

Mr Helmore had been on holiday away from the B&B since the previous Monday and Ms McNamara also dialled 999.

In his deposition, Douglas Culligan said that he has known Mark Helmore for 30 years and has known Lucy for around the same time.

Mr Culligan said: 'She lived in England but she used to come over here with the kids.'

Mr Culligan said that he received a call from Mark Helmore at around 10.55pm 'and Mark told me that he thought that Lucy was after committing suicide'.

Mark asked Douglas to go to the house and on entering Ms Birley's bedroom, Mr Culligan said that he saw feet sticking out from under a duvet.

He said: 'I put the back of my hand to the sole of her foot and it was stone cold.'

He added: 'I lifted the top of the duvet and I saw blood on the pillow and the barrel of a shotgun.'

Mr Culligan was on the phone to a '999' operator at the time and he said: 'I dropped the duvet and the operator asked me if she was cold and I replied 'Stone cold. I touched her foot'.'

Mr Culligan then phoned Mr Helmore to inform him of the tragic news.

Ms O'Dea said that the post mortem report showed that Ms Birley had very little alcohol in her system and a therapeutic level of anti-depressant medication.

Ms O'Dea and Insp Tom Kennedy extended their sympathies to Mr Helmore.

In response, Mr Helmore said that he wanted to thank and express his 'great appreciation and gratitude to all emergency services and in particular to the Garda response for the sensitivity and professionalism in which they undertook their duties'.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
