«Breaking News» Amazon bids for Disney's 22 regional sports networks

Amazon has made a bid for all of the 22 regional sports TV networks that Disney acquired from Twenty-First Century Fox.

The potential deal is the e-commerce giant’s most aggressive foray into sports broadcasting and a potential landmark moment for the industry.

Teams and leagues have been waiting for digital giants like Apple, Facebook and Google to make a push into acquiring live sports rights.

Amazon has already dabbled in sports broadcasting, and has shown ‘Thursday Night Football’ broadcasts this fall and airing the US Open tennis tournament in the United Kingdom.

But the company has now reportedly entered the running to purchase 22 regional cable networks across the country.

In addition to Amazon, Apollo Global Management, KKR, The Blackstone Group, Sinclair Broadcast Group and Tegna also made first-round bids for the full slate of networks, sources told CNBC.

The group of channels includes the YES Network, which broadcasts New York Yankees games, and regional sports networks in St Louis and Detroit, as well as a slew of others.

The networks, valued at around $20 billion, hold the local rights to a tapestry of NBA, NHL and Major League Baseball teams.

Alan Wolk, co-founder and lead analyst for the media consulting firm TVREV told CNBC: 'In the other cases, [Amazon has] been taking second dibs, airing content that is also on traditional TV.

‘This is the first time when it’s like, Yeah we want the whole thing. It’s a big deal’.

Disney acquired the 22 regional sports networks, as they are known, from 21st Century Fox last year as part of a much larger deal.

But it has been required by the Department of Justice to sell them because of antitrust laws.

Disney has 90 days to sell the channels from the date the Fox deal closes, which is expected to be early next year.

Earlier this year, Fox sold some television and movie assets to Disney, which owns the sports channel ESPN. The Justice Department forced Disney to sell the Fox regional sports networks to get that deal done.

Fox acquired its 80 percent interest in the YES Network in separate transactions in 2012 and 2014.

YES is home to the New York Yankees and also carries Brooklyn Nets games.

Dan Cohen, who leads the sports marketing company Octagon’s media rights consulting practice told the Washington Post.

‘NHL, NBA and MLB teams aren’t going to be in love with the idea that their local content could be going to be put behind a Prime subscription’.

Cohen suggested Amazon could introduce a model where a baseball team might put some of its games behind a Prime paywall, while other broadcasts would be available to stream free.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
