«Breaking News» Sale Sharks rugby star headbutted cop and threatened to rape colleague in drunken rampage

Mark Jennings, who plays for Sale Sharks, assaulted the cop and used 'threatening, and abusive behaviour' towards other officers

A top rugby player head-butted a policeman and threatened to rape his female colleague after smashing up his luxury home in a drunken rampage, a court heard.

Mark Jennings, who plays for Sale Sharks, assaulted the cop and used 'threatening, and abusive behaviour' towards other officers called to his house after a domestic on February 2.

Jennings, 26, was taken into a room at his £500,000 home for questioning following a 999 call.

The star then embarked on a violent and abusive tirade, resisting arrest and resulting him being hauled away in handcuffs, Manchester Magistrates Court heard.

Crown Prosecutor David Morgan said: 'At 11pm the evening officers were called to Mr Jenning's home.

'He was taken into a separate room by the officer.

'He made comments about the questioning police officers. He resisted being put into hand-cuffs.

'He head-butted a police officer in the chest.

'During the journey to the police station he told the officers that he was going to kill them and he told one police officer he was going to rape them.'

Jennings, who wore a blue blazer, blue trousers, a buttoned-down white shirt and tie, stood in the dock as he listened to the charges against him.

The player, who was born in Namibia, in south-west Africa, pleaded guilty to a charge of assaulting a police officer and a charge of causing a public order offence by using threatening, abusive and insulting a police officer.

His solicitor Mark Haslam told the court Jennings had been unwell and described the offences as a 'very sad case'.

The lawyer asked the court to adjourn the case before sentencing so that the bench of magistrates could consider 'medical reports' on Jenning's mental health.

Chair of magistrates Kin-Ming Cheng adjourned the case until March 28 and released Jennings on unconditional bail.

He added that Jennings must make sure he attended the next hearing and warned him not to commit any further offences while on bail.

Once hailed as a schoolboy rugby prodigy, Jennings signed for with Sale Sharks on his 16th birthday, becoming their youngest ever player.

He has played almost 100 matches for the Manchester-based team and has represented England Under 20.

However, his career has been blighted by injury.

Three days after his arrest Jennings agreed to take a 'sabbatical' from the Sale Sharks Rugby Union Football Club for the 'foreseeable future'.

At the time Jennings thanked the club following the announcement of his sabbatical, saying he hoped to return to the team at some point.

He claimed his career break was due to injury.

He said: 'I'd like to thank Sale Sharks for the opportunity and the understanding to allow me to fully recover away from the club and hopefully return once I am fully fit.'

Sale Sharks boss Steve Diamond added: 'Mark has been a great member of the squad throughout the last eight years and I'd like to thank Mark for his contribution to the club.

'We wish him well in his recovery process.'

Sale Sharks declined to comment when contacted by MailOnline regarding Jennings' arrest and charges.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
