Military-style semi-automatic assault rifles have been banned in New Zealand under new laws following the Christchurch mosque attack.
The country will also ban assault rifles, high capacity magazines, and certain modification parts.`
New Zealand's prime minister Jacinda Ardern announced the ban on Thursday, following the attack that killed 50 at two mosques in the city on Friday.
'In short, every semi-automatic weapon used in the terrorist attack on Friday will be banned in this country,' she said.
'We are confident as a government that the vast majority of New Zealanders will support this change.'
An amnesty would be put in place for the weapons to be handed in, with a buyback scheme to be announced soon, at an estimated cost of $NZ100 million to $NZ200 million.
More than 70,000 people called for the guns to be banned in a petition to the government.

There are an estimated 1.5 million firearms in New Zealand - roughly one for every three citizens and more than double the rate in Australia.
Under the old law pest control was legally considered a reason to own a military-style semi-automatic weapon and there were no restrictions on the number of guns or ammunition a person could own.
'On March 15 our history changed forever. Now, our laws will too. We are announcing action today on behalf of all New Zealanders to strengthen our gun laws and make our country a safer place,' Ms Ardern said.
'Cabinet agreed to overhaul the law when it met on Monday, 72 hours after the horrific terrorism act in Christchurch.
The prime minister added that an amnesty would be held to allow people to hand in the banned weapons, as well as a buyback scheme.
Police and the military, as well as pest control workers and some sportsmen and women, will be granted exemptions from the law.
'To owners who have legitimate uses for their guns, I want to reiterate that the actions being announced today are not because of you, and are not directed at you. Our actions, on behalf of all New Zealanders, are directed at making sure this never happens again,' Ms Ardern added.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
