«Breaking News» ‘High do!’ Bride-to-be is thrilled with proposal on the roof of seventh-Century Rochester Cathedral

For a young Christian woman, a private tour of a seventh century Cathedral became an even greater delight than expected when her boyfriend got down on one knee on the roof - and proposed.

Thanks to thoughtful secret plans made by Joel Shopland, 26, his girlfriend Joanna Hay, 25, thought the couple were simply enjoying the spectacular views from the roof of Rochester Cathedral.

But as her family looked on - unbeknownst to her - from a nearby rooftop, Joel knelt down to propose on February 23, just six months after the pair started dating.

Joanna said: 'I had no idea - I went to get my car washed before hand not realising this was messing up all the plans.'

Joel had pretended his father was meeting someone from the Diocese when he invited Joanna to tour the cathedral - the second-oldest in England dating to 604 AD.

He explained: 'Jo was just completely shocked - it was brilliant because we managed to make it look like a spontaneous tour until we got out onto the roof and she realised what was going on.

'The guide was giving us the history of the cathedral which I was not paying any attention to because I was so nervous and I had to make sure everything was ready for when I popped the question.'

The couple and their parents were greeted by cathedral staff member Colin Tolhurst who said he needed to check the fire alarms were working on the roof and invited Joel and Joanna to join him.

Joanna, originally from Basingstoke, said: 'We were having the tour and Joel said "there's a reason why I invited you up here."

'Then he read out this letter from year back - it was from a Christian lady who got a message from God about her future partner- then got got down on one knee and proposed.

'He then said "look over there" and my dad and his mum were in the windows of Rochester Castle taking photos and waving, and my sister and husband were also on the ramp leading up to the castle.'

Canny Joel had arranged for his future father-in-law, Peter Hay, and some of Joanna's other relatives to be stood high up in the nearby castle from where they could watch the proposal at a discrete distance.

The loved-up couple met through their church while studying at Brunel University in West London four years ago, but the religious pair have only been dating for six months.

Joanna was studying to become a physiotherapist, while Joel was studying sports science.

But Joanna relocated to work in Kent and it was not until August last year they started dating.

Joel and Joanna hope to tie the knot at Joanna's family church in Hampshire in August - a year after they became a couple.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
