«Breaking News» UK weather: More than a MILLION stay at home as Apocalypse SNOW hits

More than a million children, parents and workers are enjoying a 'snowday' at home today - but millions more suffered hellish commutes while they were tucked up on the sofa or outside making snowmen and sledging.

At least 2,000 schools across Britain serving 800,000-plus children were shut after 'doomsday' snow caused chaos with some areas getting up to ten inches overnight on the coldest night in the UK for seven years.

The Met Office has issued an amber warning that carries a 'potential risk to life' with more extreme snowfall expected in the Home Counties and West Country until lunchtime, cutting off towns and villages.

Devon and Cornwall have been the worst hit by the overnight 'snowbomb' but schools appear to be closed across Britain with some critics suggesting today: 'We see a snowflake and we become snowflakes'.

But commuters posted photos of empty roads and station platforms as it appears many chose to work from home or take the day off - with the sarcastic hashtag #Snowmageddon trending with ironic images of fake carnage.

Around 12 hours of snowfall - the heaviest in England this winter - knocked out power for around 1,000 homes in and around Southampton. Flights across the south were cancelled, including from London Heathrow.

Bournemouth Airport and Bristol Airport were shut with rail lines closed as blizzards battered the UK. Snowfall and icy conditions will cause widespread travel disruption this morning after temperatures plummeted.

In Devon and Cornwall, hundreds of motorists blocked roads after abandoning their vehicles following the arrival of 'snowbomb' - but the sea of cars, lorries and vans meant gritters and emergency vehicles failed to get through.

On the A30 crossing Bodmin Moor, more than 100 people were stuck in their cars for ten hours. Some slept inside their vehicles while others made it to the famous Jamaica Inn pub where they spent the night on makeshift beds.

Dominic Burton, 20, was among the stranded and said: 'It's like doomsday here, like a zombie movie. I have just passed around 200 cars trying to go southbound on the A30.'

The RAC said their teams were working 'flat out to reach drivers in some challenging conditions'. They are expected to attend seven breakdowns a minute on average – totalling around 10,000 by the end of today.

After an extraordinary dump of snow fell overnight, it emerged:

  • More than 2,000 schools are closed across the country due to snow - keeping 500,000 pupils at home

  • The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning of snow for part of the south-east with Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, and Hampshire expected to be worst hit;

  • Flights were affected with Bristol Airport closed until at least 12pm and Bournemouth Airport shut 'until further notice'. Short-haul flights from Heathrow are subject to cancellations;

  • Highways Agency issues warnings for more than 20 major A-roads and motorways hit by snow and warns drivers not to travel unless essential.

In Bristol more than half of the city's schools were closed due to the weather and roadside refuse and recycling collections have been cancelled.

In Gloucestershire waste and recycling collections have also been cancelled across Cotswold district.

A pivoting system of wintry weather saw much of southern England and Wales wake up to more of the white stuff.

An amber warning was issued for an area west of London including Oxfordshire, Hampshire and Buckinghamshire, with stranded vehicles and power cuts 'likely', and a 'good chance' some rural communities could be cut off.

The alert comes after as much as 5.5in (14cm) of snow wreaked havoc in the South West yesterday. Efforts to rescue motorists stranded on snowbound roads in Devon and Cornwall continued through the night.

Meanwhile hundreds of people were forced to find shelter where they could. Persistent snow began to spread across the south east late last night and flurries were seen all the way into central London.

The Met Office has also has two yellow weather warnings of snow and ice in force until this afternoon covering southern England and Wales, as well as the eastern edge of the UK from Shetland to The Wash.

Police forces across the country are warning motorists to consider if their journeys are necessary before heading out today and be 'extremely careful' if have to travel by road.

On the rail network, Southeastern and Transport for Wales have altered their services today as a result of the adverse conditions.

South Western Railway was planning to run a normal timetable, but warned some early services may need to be cancelled as routes are cleared.

Meanwhile Southern, Thameslink, Great Northern and Gatwick Express were expected to run normally, although all passengers were urged to check before they travel in case the conditions impact services.

Transport for London also advised passengers to check their service status before setting off. Airports were also hit by the freezing weather, with Bristol Airport suspending flights until 8am while the runway was cleared.

Bristol Airport has said its airfield will remain closed until 12pm.

The airport said on Twitter: 'As a result of continued adverse weather, our teams are working hard to clear the airfield... A further update will be given as the situation changes. Please contact your airline for specific flight queries.'

Snow was also seen falling at Heathrow, where British Airways altered a number of short-haul flights, and passengers using the hub were being told to stay in contact with their airlines before travelling.

Gatwick Airport also saw flurries, although the airport was advising passengers it was planning on operating as normal today.

Met Office meteorologist Emma Smith said: 'There is still sleet and snow across southern counties, the band is currently sitting across the south-west and Wales and across to East Anglia and London.

'It's kind of pivoting in place and it's not really moving very far. What will be happening to it is it will get patchier as it goes on, but it could cause some disruption to rush hour.

'Temperatures are widely below freezing so there's icy stretches so people will have to take care going into work.'

By lunchtime temperatures in the South East are expected to nudge towards 4C (39F), meaning the sleet and snow should turn to rain.

How to stop your car freezing over with a BAG

With Britain waking up to sub-zero temperatures, many of us will be spending time de-icing our cars.

But one way to stop this happening to your mirrors is to tie a plastic bag over them with an elastic band.

When you take off the bags in the morning, the mirrors should not require de-icing, even if temperatures are below freezing.

The RAC advises that clearing a windscreen of ice or snow should take about ten minutes using a scraper or de-icer spray.

Drivers should avoiding using boiling water to clear snow and ice. The thermal shock from 100C water can cause windows to crack, the breakdown firm says.

'Into the afternoon those showers will go into the Pennies and the Peak District as well,' Ms Smith said.

The Met Office said a low of minus -15.4C (4.3F) was recorded just before midnight at Braemar. Had it fallen more than 0.2C, lower it would have surpassed the low of -15.6C (3.92F) set in 2012.

Across Devonshire 34 schools have said they will be closed or partially closed today and 35 schools across Cornwall have also said they will not be opening, according to the two county councils.

Shoppers stuck for two hours in Tesco gridlock

Panicked shoppers stocking up for snow were stuck for more than two hours - when their supermarket sweep caused gridlock.

Worried shoppers rushed to grab bread, milk and other essentials from a Tesco Extra in Cardiff.

But the 'vast number' of people caused gridlock in the supermarket car park - leaving them unable to leave for hours.

One customer said: 'It was gridlocked. Thank heavens I have got heated seats, it was horrendous.'

Another woman said: 'Two hours to get out of Tesco Western avenue cardiff car park this PM. Asked the customer service assistant in store what was happening; the response? 'Not our problem'.'

A Cardiff council spokesman said: 'It appears that due to the current weather forecast, a vast number of people have visited the store to buy groceries.

'We believe this is the reason why there has been a tailback of vehicles leaving the car park which has caused the delays that are being reported.'

'People were fed up of being in a cold car and they were running out of fuel.'

Each of the inn's 36 rooms was full, with some being shared by complete strangers on Thursday night.

Meanwhile makeshift dormitories with mattresses on the floors were set up in other parts of the pub, including 15 beds in the restaurant another five in the lounge.

Paul Drye, 54, from St Austell, Cornwall, was heading home after working in Dorchester, Dorset, on Thursday afternoon when he became stuck on the A30 around 3.30 pm.

He said: 'There had been a bit of heavy snow but while everything was moving it was fine, but as soon as there was a few incidents up ahead everything ground to a halt.

'You never know how long these things are going to last, whether it will be moving in two minutes or four hours as it turned out.'

Mr Drye arrived at the Jamaica Inn around 7.30 pm and was met with a real 'cross-section' of people including dogs, children and truck drivers.

'People were still arriving until the early hours of the morning, people who had left their cars and walked, a couple miles some of them,' he said.

The Jamaica Inn staff were like a 'well-oiled machine', they provided mattresses, blankets and pillows for everybody and stayed up all night stoking fires, Mr Dyre said.

#Snowmageddon! Britons tweet joy at 'snow day' off work after blizzards sweep UK while others moan of 'empty stations' as they slog to the office

Britons are rejoicing at the prospect of a snowday after blizzards swept across the UK overnight blanketing the nation in crisp, white powder.

But as commuters wrap up warm and head to work, some have noticed a suspicious lack of fellow travellers and have taken to social media to share the deserted stations along with the hashtag #Snowmageddon.

Despite the thick snow and the amber warning issued by the Met Office, Britons are seeing the fun side of the snowday, sharing pictures of their early snowman attempts and picturesque village pub dusted with the February frost.

Some have even taken their #Snowmageddon preparations to extreme lengths, stocking their fridge with dozens of bottles of milk (semi-skimmed), should the worst happen and they need endless cups of tea to sooth their woes.

She said: 'A lot of people have abandoned their cars. Some of them have walked a good three, four or five miles. People were fed up of being in a cold car.'

Ms Wheeler added that many people were running out of fuel. Each of the inn's 36 rooms was full, with some being shared by complete strangers last night.

Meanwhile makeshift dormitories with mattresses on the floors were set up in other parts of the pub, including 15 beds in the restaurant another five in the lounge.

Paul Drye, 54, of St Austell, Cornwall, was heading home after working in Dorchester, Dorset, yesterday afternoon when he became stuck on the A30 around 3.30pm.

He said: 'There had been a bit of heavy snow but while everything was moving it was fine, but as soon as there was a few incidents up ahead everything ground to a halt.

'You never know how long these things are going to last, whether it will be moving in two minutes or four hours as it turned out.'

Mr Drye arrived at the Jamaica Inn around 7.30pm and was met with a real 'cross-section' of people including dogs, children and truck drivers.

Ms Wheeler said: 'I have no sheets left and I'm sure my head housekeeper will kill me in the morning when she hears about it.

'I've stolen all duvets and everything from everywhere possible. There's no beds left but we are now letting people sleep everywhere and I'm providing them with pillows and blankets.'

Spirits were said to be 'incredibly high' among the guests, who included around a dozen children and an eight-month-old baby.

The pub's seven staff, including two chefs, were pulling out the stops to make sure all were comfortable - although they were 'in for a long one,' Ms Wheeler said.

'Credit to my staff - a shout-out goes to all of them,' she added.

The area is under a yellow weather warning of snow and ice until this afternoon and efforts continued through the night to clear the A30 and get people moving again.

Speaking at 7.30am this morning Mr Dyre said some travellers had already left to walk back to their cars and that from the Inn they could see traffic on the A30 was moving again.

A white out yesterday afternoon stopped cars in their tracks at Temple as thick snow settled up to 3ft high and drivers were forced to abandon their cars.

As darkness fell last night drivers were still stuck, some behind a jackknifed lorry, with no idea as to how or when they would make it home from work.

Highways England were urged to help stranded motorists, including those stuck with young children as drivers reported the roads were 'like an ice rink' on the A30 which runs between London and Honiton in east Devon.

Highways England confirmed a plough and a gritter had been sent to assist the stranded motorists - some of whom have got out of their cars and started a snowball fight.

But after hours on the roads many became concerned elderly relatives would spend the night there.

Cornwall Council said there was an 'intensive effort' to clear the roads while relatives of the stranded urged authorities to act faster, including those with elderly parents on the roads.

Driver Dominic Burton said about 200 vehicles were trapped on the southbound carriage of the A30 near Okehampton in 'doomsday' scenes.

People are being warned against travel in the morning on uncleared routes. Some were still on the roads at 11pm, having been there since the mid afternoon.

Desperate drivers urged police to send advice over whether or not they should keep their engines on while a pub named the Jamaica Inn laid out mattresses on the floor for stranded motorists.

Lee Flagg wrote on Twitter: 'My sister has been sat on the A30 for 5 hours. 2 young children in the car with no food, milk etc. Can anyone actually give an update that means anything??'

Another man added: 'What advice do you have for people who look likely to be spending the night on the A30.

'How to keep warm? Should they keep the engine running? How long will that last for? How can they get water? Saying 'we're working as hard as we can' is great, but need a bit more.'

Kind drivers on the A30 with four wheel drive cars began to tow others to get up a hill, around 8pm yesterday evening. Drivers described the response as a 'shambles'.

One driver said on Twitter: 'Ground to a halt at 2.30pm and it's now 8.20pm and have moved two miles. No snowploughs, no gritters, no police support, it's a shambles.'

The head of roads policing in Devon and Dorset, Chief Inspector Adrian Leisk, said: 'The snow is heading eastwards and will cause significant disruption tonight. Please be prepared and avoid all but absolutely essential travel.'

Dominic Burton, 26, was trapped with more than 20 other cars on the A30 at Okehampton

He warned people to stay with their vehicles and to check before making a journey. Concerned car owners said they had only moved a few miles in hours.

Dominic Burton, 26, was been stuck on the A30 from 4.30pm until 11pm after a lorry jackknifed at the top of a hill on the road at Okehampton.

Mr Burton from Barnstaple left work early at 4.30pm in a bid to try and get home before the worst of the snow fell.

But hours later after the lorry got stuck the snow has built up around cars, trapping them. Rescue workers were bringing in snow chains to move the lorry last night.

There were hazardous driving conditions reported across Cornwall with multiple accidents.

Police said people were abandoning their cars on the A30 at Highgate Hill and walking through the snow.

Devon and Cornwall Police urged people to stay in their cars to keep warm.

At around 8.15pm yesterday, the force tweeted: 'We have further reports of vehicles stuck on the A39 in Cornwall due to snow.

'Please stay with your vehicle and keep as warm as possible. Gritter trucks are working their way inwards from Winnards Perch and Wadebridge to get to stranded drivers.'

Mr Burton told MailOnline: 'I have travelled around nine miles since I left work but we are stuck now. It's really not a nice place to be right now.

'The lorry has jackknifed at the top of the hill and there's a recovery truck there – but the snow has been building up around us while we have been sat here. I've tried to move and I can't.

'There's about 25 of us – pretty much everyone is just trying to get home from work. I've got another hour and a half to drive – but that's in normal conditions.'

Mr Burton, who started a new job yesterday, has seen gritters travelling southbound but nothing on the northbound carriageway.

One person wrote on Twitter: 'Have moved only 100 yards in two hours! It's now 5.38pm and no end in sight of this situation. Oh, and it's still snowing!'

Some were stuck for hours in snow on Bodmin Moor.

Paul Newman said when he reached the A30 at Carland Cross heading eastbound the snow started to fall 'very, very heavily' and the traffic started to move slowly until it came to a standstill near Blissland.

'We believe the stoppage is somewhere near Kennards Cross. There is a lorry across the road. Now that everybody has stopped it is going to be difficult for lorries to get going again,' he said.

'At the moment we've no idea what's going on really... the chap in the car in front of us was just throwing snowballs to his dog!'

A couple stuck in their car on the dual carriageway after a sudden dump of snow fear they face a cold night in their vehicle.

Jak Roome was travelling to Wadebridge, Cornwall, to celebrate his 29th birthday with his partner, Jack Slymm, 27, when the roads ahead ground to a halt.

Mr Slymm said that 3ft of snow fell quickly and the road beneath froze, making it impossible to tackle the hill in front.

He said that many cars had attempted to brave the conditions but kept sliding back, and official advice online urged drivers on the road to stay in their cars.

Mr Slymm, a hair stylist from Bristol, said: 'We're currently about five miles north of Camelford and about 10 miles south of Bude on A39.

'We haven't moved for over three hours, the snow just came down really hard and really quick and the ground froze underneath it.

'The snow at the side of the road is about 3ft deep and anyone trying to get anywhere is just sliding. One gritter just came past and it didn't make the slightest bit of difference'

Mr Slymm said that he had recently taken his car to the garage, and luckily was completing the drive in a brand new grey Mini Cooper.

He continued: 'We're going to be here all night I think, luckily we've got 3/4 tank but the people next to us only have half a tank left.

'Everyone is helping each other and asking if each other are ok, if someone runs out of fuel we'll take them in.'

To make matters worse, Mr Slymm and Mr Slymm have recently bought a puppy and are travelling with the young animal - and have to keep braving the conditions to get it water.

'We've got a 13-week old puppy with us and we're worried about her', Jak said. 'We didn't have any water in the car so we had to melt some snow.

'Luckily we had some food with us, but we can't leave her outside for too long as it's too cold.

'No one has told us anything, but the traffic report says to stay with your car and wait for the weather to clear.

'We're trying to get to Wadebridge, we've rented a house for all of us. It's my 29th birthday today, I'll look back and laugh at it one day.'

Elsewhere, Londoners have have been warned to be home by 9pm this evening as snow is set to hit the capital, after blizzards blasted the South West today causing travel chaos on roads and rail.

Workers and schoolchildren were told to leave early today as Britain endured up to three inches of snow in only 120 minutes, following the country's coldest night in seven years.

And the Met Office has issued an amber warning for snow that carries a potential risk to life while Transport for London and Network Rail are telling passengers to get home by 9pm.

County officials in Devon had urged people to get home by 3pm, shortly after the start of an amber warning for snow in parts of Wales and South West England, bringing up to 2.8in (7cm) of snow in just two to three hours.

Meanwhile, about 400 students were stranded at Callywith College in Bodmin.

Principal Mark Wardle said buses to transport students had not been able to get to the sixth-form college, and catering staff were providing sausages, chips and beans to those waiting for assistance.

Surrounded by hills, and sitting on the Cotswold Way in the south Cotswolds, footage shows green trees turned white with roofs covered in frost far as the eye can see.

The panaromic views of the countryside stretch to the River Severn and beyond as snow continues to gentle fall across the region.

Pictured: Newborn baby girl found abandoned in freezing cold snow-blown London park as police launch urgent bid to find her missing mother

A newborn baby girl was found abandoned in an east London park last night as temperatures plunged to freezing and blizzards hit the capital.

Police this morning released a picture of the infant in a bid to trace her mother, who officers said they were 'increasingly concerned' for.

The girl was discovered in a small park on an estate in Newham at around 10:15pm on Thursday night and taken to hospital where she is being cared for, the Metropolitan Police said.

The Met said officers are growing 'increasingly concerned' for the mother's welfare and appealed for her to contact police, her local hospital or GP surgery.

In a direct appeal to the child's mother, Inspector Shane Clarke of North East Command Unit, said: 'We are growing increasingly concerned for your welfare and I urge you to make contact either with police, your local hospital or GP surgery. It is really important that we know that you are safe.

'I would also urge anyone who has information that could help us to reunite this baby with her mother to come forward.'

Anyone with information as to the whereabouts of the mother is asked to call police on 101 quoting reference CAD7825/31JAN or Tweet @MetCC.

Heavy snowfall hit much of southern England and and Wales on Thursday night, leaving people trapped in cars as temperatures plummeted to just 1C (34F) in east London at the time the baby way found.

The snowfall already exceeds the maximum 10cm of snowfall that was predicted when the Mt Office issued a severe weather warning for Thursday.

The snow, which has been travelling eastwards, has reached as far as Wiltshire, Hampshire, Sussex and Kent, with a few flakes in central London on Thursday and into the early hours of Friday morning.

The Met Office tweeted: 'Snow, initially moving north and east across parts of southern and southwestern England, the Midlands and Wales, will stall and tend to fragment.

'Wintry showers will continue in northern and eastern areas. Ice is likely in many parts overnight.'

There are 'treacherous driving conditions in places', the forecaster added.

Commuters in many parts of the country were warned to leave work early on Thursday to ensure they got home.

Link hienalouca.com This is interesting We are looking for an investor for a project to grow dinosaurs from chicken eggs and relict plants. Necessary amount of investments from 400 000 to 900 000 dollars. For all interested parties, e-mail angocman@gmail.com. This will be very interesting.

https://hienalouca.com/2019/02/01/uk-weather-more-than-a-million-stay-at-home-as-apocalypse-snow-hits/
Main photo article More than a million children, parents and workers are enjoying a ‘snowday’ at home today – but millions more suffered hellish commutes while they were tucked up on the sofa or outside making snowmen and sledging.
At least 2,000 schools across Britain serving 800,000-plus ...

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
