«Breaking News» Good Morning Britain hosts Piers and Susanna show support for colleague Alex Beresford

Good Morning Britain hosts Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid today showed their support for their colleague Alex Beresford after his cousin was stabbed to death.

The duo said they were 'absolutely heartbroken' for the weatherman after Nathaniel Armstrong, 29, became the 18th person stabbed to death in London this year.

The murder in Fulham in the early hours of Saturday came less than a fortnight after Beresford spoke out against the knife crime epidemic live on the ITV programme.

Today, Reid said: 'Our hearts go out this morning to Alex Beresford and of course his family because of the tragic loss of his cousin, 29-year-old Nathaniel Armstrong.

'We'd heard about this stabbing in Fulham, it's not far from where I live in South London, on Saturday morning - but it came as an absolute shock over the weekend to find out that this young man, promising young man, was actually related to Alex.

Susannah Reid's full statement on Good Morning Britain today

'We just want to say our hearts go out this morning to Alex Beresford and of course his family because of the tragic loss of his cousin, 29-year-old Nathaniel Armstrong.

'We'd heard about this stabbing in Fulham, it's not far from where I live in South London, on Saturday morning - but it came as an absolute shock over the weekend to find out that this young man, promising young man, was actually related to Alex.

'And we're just absolutely heartbroken for you, Alex. Alex had jumped into a debate that we'd had about knife crime just two weeks ago on this programme, you'll remember, and made headlines for saying longer prison sentences for perpetrators wouldn't work.

'So he has issued a statement just paying tribute to his cousin - and it's absolutely tragic loss. A needless loss of life.

'And of course police are investigating - and if you have any information about what might have happened in the early hours of Saturday morning to Nathaniel Armstrong, 29 years old, we do urge you to go to police with that.

'And, as I said, all our love to Alex and his family as they get through this terrible, terrible time.'

She added: We need to look for some light, don't we, amidst the gloom this morning?'

'So he has issued a statement just paying tribute to his cousin - and it's absolutely tragic loss. A needless loss of life.'

She urged anyone who knew what might have happened to go forward to police, adding: 'As I said, all our love to Alex and his family as they get through this terrible, terrible time.'

Sitting alongside DailyMail.com US Editor-at-Large Morgan, Reid added: We need to look for some light, don't we, amidst the gloom this morning?'

During the programme this morning, Beresford tweeted: 'I would have liked to have been on Good Morning Britain this morning but wasn't able to be there because of a family funeral.

'Praise to Akala for putting it into an understandable perspective. Most are blinded by and judge on what they see in the media.'

He spoke about Akala after the rapper appeared on the programme today.

He said: 'There are several regions of the country that have higher murder rates than London does. Clearly throughout human history black people have not had anything remotely resembling a monopoly on violence.

'Over the last few years some of the most horrendous knife attacks, both the victims and the perpetrators have been white and they've not been from London.'

He cited examples including a 13-year-old girl stabbed to death in Southampton, a 16-year-old stabbed to death in Dinnington, a seven-year-old girl stabbed to death in York and a five-year-old stabbed to death by their own mother in Oxfordshire.

Akala added: 'When both the perpetrator and the victims are white, race becomes unimportant. There is one limited sense in which race becomes important.

'You could argue that only a very particular demographic of young black boys only at a very particular stage in their lives feel a degree of psychological self-hatred or contempt for themselves that they project onto other people who remind them of themselves.

'However the black-on-black violence paradigm, so called, is never used in that way as a psychological self-hatred model.

'It's used to give the public essentially the ridiculous impression that essential black schoolteachers, black doctors, black lawyers, black Premier League footballers, my grandmother, David Adjaye, are all sort of at equal risk of violent crime.'

In a statement yesterday, Beresford said engineering graduate Mr Armstrong was 'one more example of a needless life lost to knife crime'.

Beresford interrupted a debate on knife crime during ITV's Good Morning Britain less than a fortnight ago.

Having grown up in a tough area himself, he warned prison was no longer a deterrent and called for a different approach to save innocent lives.

He likened gangs to paedophiles, saying children as young as 11 are being 'groomed' into drug runs by elders who 'shower then with gifts'.

Now he is coming to terms with the death of his cousin who was murdered on the same street in Fulham where Crimewatch host Jill Dando was shot two decades ago.

Nicknamed 'BFG' due to his 6ft 7in frame, Mr Armstrong appears to have been involved in a confrontation with two men early on Saturday 100 yards from his house.

CCTV footage seems to show three men arguing on the leafy road before going into an alley, with two men then reappearing.

A third man is then seen stumbling into the street before collapsing. Police were called at 12.30am after passers-by found him in a pool of blood but he died at the scene minutes later.

The victim's father has offered a reward of £20,000 to bring the killer to justice.

Tributes have poured in for the Southampton University graduate, who was a keen basketball player.

His former flatmate, George, 30, said: 'He was super friendly, a BFG. He looked super scary but it would shock you how friendly he was. He was very well liked.'

Another friend said: 'He was a good guy, he was a big man, 29, you don't do silly things like this, knife crimes.'

In a statement, Beresford said: 'I'm deeply saddened to confirm my cousin Nathaniel lost his life. We were all so shocked to receive this news yesterday and our thoughts are with his mum, his brother and sisters.

'Nathaniel was a bright young man with his whole life ahead of him and this tragedy is yet one more example of a needless life lost to knife crime.'

It rose by 12 per cent last year when nearly 40,000 knife crime incidents were reported.

Last week, Chancellor Philip Hammond announced an extra £100million to help police tackle the epidemic.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
