«Breaking News» Fleur East releases single and responds to Simon Cowell 'jungle' remark

Friday sees the release of Fleur East's comeback single, Favourite Thing, which is a typically energetic, high-paced track and a very worthy successor to 2015's Sax.

And in the run-up to the release, the singer has insisted there is no bad blood between her and her former music manager Simon Cowell - admitting she's 'terrified' about unleashing the song to the world.

Simon mentored Fleur, 31, during the 2014 season of The X Factor, in which she placed second but gained considerable notority with a cover of Bruno Mars' Uptown Funk, going on to release debut album, Love, Sax and Flashbacks.

But things quietened down following this, and eventually Fleur parted ways with Simon's company Syco. She then appeared on the most recent season of I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here!, during which time Simon appeared to make a dig at people 'going into the jungle' during one of The X Factor's recent live shows.

Speaking to MailOnline, Fleur merely chuckles when asked about this and said on Thursday: 'The music business is a harsh industry and so I have built up a bit of a wall [to remarks like that].

'But knowing Simon - he’s not malicious and I think it was a light-hearted.

'I wouldn't be in this position without The X Factor. I will be forever grateful to the show and to Simon. Without all that I wouldn't have even been given the opportunity to go into jungle, so I thank him for that.'

The music mogul, 59, was giving criticism to his mentee Scarlett Lee, when he told her: 'I don't want you in the jungle in two years time drinking worm juice.'

Simon, who is renowned for his brutal honesty, added: 'I want you on Broadway or on the West End selling records. You've got prepare for your duet.'

Of Favourite Thing - which will be available to stream and download on Friday and sees the singer performing a 'tribal' routine in the elaborate music video - Fleur added: 'I am really excited now. But this song is about me exposing myself more to my listeners. I think people know me a lot more since going into the jungle. They will hear this song and understand the person behind the music.'

Back behind the mic: I'm A Celeb has opened doors for the star with potential radio, TV and acting work in the pipeline. But Fleur's main goal is to collate the material she has under her belt from the past 18 months and to release a second studio album, and hopefully tour. 'It's always best to take things step-by-step,' she says. 'But I have a lot of things I want to do still.'

Dwelling on her fame post-X Factor, Fleur addressed the highs and the lows of finding a hit single in Sax.

'Sax ran away from me and it sort of became its own identity,' she said. 'And then, yeah, it was a shame I didn’t get to release more singles from the album.

'But with [the new single] people know me more, so it's more real, and they will feel closer I think.'

Fleur's musical comeback was planned before the jungle was even on the horizon, she explained - finally getting into the studio with a batch of new songs in October after 2 years lying relatively low.

What was scarier? 'I left the label, have gone into the jungle – and on that you are judged on your own character alone. But music is external. You're being judged on that, not your own personality. So both are terrifying,' she said

'Then the jungle was offered,' she said. 'And stuff just sort of came together, the timing was right, the jungle opportunity came amidst all of this. Everything happens for a reason – all the dots started to connect. So I thought I wanted to have the new song in the bag and have the video filmed before all that.'

In fact, the star was convinced she'd be releasing Favourite Thing before Christmas.

'I figured that if I came out of the jungle first I could just release it then, regardless.'

Clearly underselling herself, Fleur went on to remind the public why they loved her on The X Factor and was the fourth-from-last campmate to leave I'm A Celeb 2018, just one day away from being in the final.

But what was scarier: the jungle or her music comeback?

'They are equally as terrifying but in very different ways,' she said. 'Obviously, there has been a huge gap between my last music and now. I left the label, have gone into the jungle – and on that you are judged on your own character alone.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
