«Breaking News» France's Prime Minister sacks Paris police chief and bans Yellow Vest protests on Champs Elysees

The French government has banned Yellow Vest protests from Paris after the movement rioted and caused millions of pounds worth of damage.

In a high-risk move that may backfire, Prime Minister Edouard Philippe said he wanted to avoid the scenes of chaos that saw high-shops, restaurants and other businesses looted and put to the torch last Saturday.

The Champs Elysee, the most famous avenue in France, was the worst hit, as police used tear gas, batons and water canon to try and restrain a crowd of around 10,000.

In a TV address on Monday following crisis meetings, Mr Philippe said: 'From next Saturday, we will ban Yellow Vest protests in districts that have been the worst hit as soon as we see sign of the presence of radical groups and their intent to cause damage.'

Mr Philippe blamed 'about 1500 troublemakers' for 'looting, destroying property and causing injury', adding: 'These were criminal acts. The government's response must be strong.'

Mr Philippe also admitted that 'inappropriate orders' were handed out to Paris officers on Saturday, and that he was sacking police chief Michel Delpuech, and replacing him with Didier Lallement, from the South West.

Fines for taking part in a banned demo will also rise from the current equivalent of £35, said Mr Philippe.

President Emmanuel Macron cut short a skiing holiday at the weekend and vowed 'tough action' to stop the increasing scenes of disorder.

'Now that's the end,' he said. 'I demand that such scenes must not be repeated, especially on the Champs Elysee'.

In 2014, the then government of Francois Hollande banned a pro-Palestine rally in Paris, but it went ahead anyway and descended into a mass riot.

The Yellow Vests - who are named after their high visibility motoring jackets - began weekly protests across France four months ago, initially because of fuel tax rises.

The movement escalated into a broader revolt against the Paris establishment, calling for Mr Macron to resign.

French security forces used a 'last resort' chemical weapon against them for the first time on Saturday.

In a move showing the increasing desperation of Mr Macron's government, gendarmes confirmed that a 'small amount' of the gas was released close to the Arc de Triomphe.

Video posted online by the independent Taranis news outlet showed the debilitating substance coming out of gendarmerie armed cars.

Police have used a range of controversial weapons so far, from rounds of tear gas to so-called 'flash ball' rubber bullets that have caused scores of injuries.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
