«Breaking News» Filmmaker details why he secretly recorded his friend confessing to the murder of Sarah Stern

A New Jersey filmmaker who corroborated with an undercover sting operation to tape his friend confessing to the murder of Sarah Stern has revealed why, in a new interview.

Speaking on ABC News' 20/20, 21-year-old Anthony Curry said he doesn't see himself as a hero for his actions - he just thought it was the right thing to do.

'I didn't do it for fame and notoriety...I was doing it to bring closure to a family,' he told anchor Amy Robach.

Curry secretly recorded Liam McAtasney revealing how he killed childhood friend, Sarah Stern, 19, for her $100,000 inheritance back in 2016.

On Tuesday, McAtasney, 21, was convicted of first-degree murder, robbery and five other counts including desecration of human remains.

His accomplice, Preston Taylor, pleaded guilty in helping McAtasney to dispose of the body into Shark River, and testified against him at trial.

Prosecutors credit much of the justice served to amateur filmmaker Curry, who came forward to police in January 2017 - a month after the murder - to tell them of a strange interaction he'd had with McAtasney.

'[Sarah Stern's father] Michael Stern does not get to know what happens to his daughter without Anthony Curry,' Monmouth County assistant prosecutor Meghan Doyle told ABC.

'I firmly believe that [Curry] is extremely modest about it and uncomfortable with that role, but to me, he will always be the hero and the reason we were able to bring this case to court.'

Sarah Stern disappeared without a trace in December 2016.

Her body was never found, but police did discover her abandoned car with keys still in the ignition on a bridge in New Jersey.

On Thanksgiving 2016, a week before Stern disappeared, Curry said McAtasney pitched to him an idea for a grisly film.

The plot-line, consisting of murdering a young girl and throwing her off the bridge with his friend, came from an idea that McAtasney had specifically had, Curry said.

'I'm a filmmaker. He used to tell me ideas all the time about films I should make and all that stuff.

'And he told me about this idea he had to kill this girl ... that he was going to strangle her and throw her over the bridge with his friend,' he said to ABC.

It wasn't until Stern's disappearance that Curry thought he was discussing a real murder plot.

On Tuesday, McAtasney was found guilty of all seven counts against him, including first-degree murder and robbery (pictured: McAtasney looks toward the gallery where his family is seated, Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2019)

'I was like, "yeah, he's a little nuts." But I don't know, I just thought it was a movie,' Curry said.

Shortly after Stern was reported missing, Curry said McAtasney started contacting him almost daily, leaving him messages saying "I've got to tell you something".'

And after he sent a message to Curry asking 'if the cops had questioned' him about McAtasney's possible involvement in Stern's disappearance, Curry went straight to the police.

There, New Jersey investigators asked the then 19-year-old to participate in a sting operation to secretly record conversations with McAtasney and elicit a confession.

Curry agreed, fearing his own family could be in danger with McAtasney still at large.

'If somebody is capable of doing that, he could try to hurt my family or somebody I knew ... kid’s wacko,' Curry said during the 20/20 interview.

In January 2017, police set up a series of visual and audio bugs in Curry's car, and he drove to meet with McAtasney.

'I pretty much hung her,' McAtasney says in the footage.

'I picked her up and had her dangling off the ground. It took me a half hour to kill her. I set a timer.'

McAtasney says in the video that he then shoved a shirt down her throat and placed his finger on her nose.

He said the biggest problem was Stern's dog but it just 'laid there and watched as I killed her.'

Curry's secretly filmed video captured a full confessional from McAtasney. He described how he felt no remorse for the killing and voiced his anguish at only receiving $8,000

McAtasney went onto tell his friend that he needed Taylor's help dumping Stern's body off the Belmar bridge because he didn't realize how heavy she would be.

In the video, McAtasney also talks about he thought he was going to get $100,000 by robbing Stern of her inheritance after killing her, but that he only got $8,000.

'The worst part of it is I thought I was going to come out $50,000 to a $100,000 in my pocket. She had one safe that she took money out, and she only had $10,000,' he said.

'And this money, I don't know if it was burnt or something, it's f*****g old money. Terrible quality. I don't even know if I can put any of it in the f*****g bank.'

'I don't feel any different, I really don't think about it,' McAtasney said of the murder. 'You always think you're going to try all these new things and change, but it just doesn't do anything. It's weird.'

Curry replied: 'It's a f****** movie, man.'

McAtasney replied: 'It's your life. You might as well make it one. What are you going to live some boring a** life?'

On Tuesday, a jury found McAtasney guilty of murdering Stern in an effort to steal the interference money left behind by her late mother.

With his roommate Preston Taylor, McAtasney then dumped her body off the site of Belmar bridge.

Pleading not guilty, McAtasney now faces life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Taylor, who testified against the former as part of a plea deal, could face up to 20 years, with charges including robbery, conspiracy, disturbing or desecrating human remains and hindering apprehension.

They will be sentenced in May.

20/20 airs tonight at 9pm EST on ABC.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
