«Breaking News» China's AI subway station: Travellers will be able to pay by scanning their faces at turnstiles

The Shenzhen Metro is looking to transform one of its busiest subway stations by combining 5G technology and artificial intelligence.

Facial recognition cameras will be installed at turnstiles at the Futian Public Transportation depot to allow passengers to pay for their tickets by scanning their faces while robots powered by AI will patrol the platforms to strengthen security.

While plans are underway to expand and develop the technology, an 'experience area' was set up in the station on Friday to allow travellers to test out the devices, according to Shenzhen Metro.

Once a person scans his/her face at the gate at the Futian Public Transportation depot, the image would be matched to the personal information registered in the operator's database and allow the passenger to go through

A passenger who tried out the automated ticket booth said the process would save people a lot of time.

'It's way faster than tapping a credit card or scanning your phone to pay,' the man told video news site Pear.

The security robot, also equipped with facial recognition cameras, would capture clear shots of passengers' faces to spot criminal suspects at the train station.

'With the help of modern technology, the Shenzhen Metro will be a "smarter" station by combining 5G technology and artificial intelligence,' the operator said in a news release on Friday.

By deploying the 5G network, the next generation of wireless service, passengers would be able to gain high-speed internet access throughout their journey.

Together with AI capabilities, station staff can in the future improve management efficiency and service quality, Shenzhen Metro said, adding that it hopes to develop a permanent installation of the technologies.

The Futian Public Transportation depot is a major transit centre that connects buses, taxis, subway trains and high-speed railways. More than 350,000 trips are made by passengers at the station every day, according to previous reports.

China has been aggressively applying facial recognition technology in everything from distribution of toilet paper by public lavatories to identifying drunk drivers - virtually in real time.

The cutting-edge network aims to identify any one of its 1.4 billion citizens within three seconds. Last September, the Chinese government installed over 20 million security cameras across the nation.

It is part of China's efforts to build a digital surveillance system able to use a variety of biometric data - from photos and iris scans to fingerprints - to keep close tabs on the movements of its 1.4 billion population.

The main goal is for the system to match someone's face to their ID photo 90 per cent of the time.

Last month, transport authorities also announced that a 5G digital indoor system will be installed in the Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station, one of Asia's busiest traffic hubs that handles about about 60 million passengers a year.

The project was launched by the Ministry of Public Security in 2015. It is under development in collaboration with a security company based in Shanghai.

  • High-tech sunglasses: Police at Zhengzhou, central China use sunglasses equipped with facial recognition technology to spot criminal suspects at train stations.

  • On the road: Traffic police in Shenzhen has implemented 40 sets of surveillance cameras dubbed 'robocops' to identify the faces of unruly drivers and regulate traffic.

  • At pedestrian crossings: Jaywalkers in Shenzhen would receive an instant notification and a fine as soon as they violate the rules. Images and names of people crossing the road against red traffic lights would get projected onto large LED screens.

  • Concert stadiums: Using facial recognition technology as part of security measures, police arrested three fugitives within two months at the concerts of Hong Kong pop singer Jacky Cheung in China.

  • In bathrooms: Bathrooms in Changsha and Chongqing were outfitted with facial recognition systems to prevent greedy patrons from nabbing extra toilet paper.

  • In classrooms: A high school in Zhejiang province uses a smart classroom system that monitors students' behaviour via facial-recognition technology. The cameras installed at the front of each classroom would document the students' attentiveness and even their facial expressions.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
