«Breaking News» Oscars 2019: Olivia Colman brings down the house with charming speech

Olivia Colman is the new queen of Hollywood after being named best actress for her role as troubled Queen Anne in The Favourite.

The British actress was a surprise winner, beating out the category favourite Glenn Close, who was widely expected to win her first Oscar in seven nominations for The Wife.

The other nominees for best actress were Yalitza Aparicio for Roma, Lady Gaga for A Star is Born and Melissa McCarthy of Can You Ever Forgive Me?

'It's genuinely quite stressful. This is hilarious. I got an Oscar,' Colman said during her charming speech.

'I have to thank lots of people. Yorgos [Lanthimos], my best director and the best film with Emma [Stone] and Rachel [Weisz], the two loveliest women to fall in love with and go to work with every day. You can imagine it wasn't a hardship.'

She gazed at Close in the audience and said, 'You've been my idol for so long and this is not how I wanted it to be.'

Close smiled and laughed.

The 71-year-old American is 0-for-7 at the Oscars. Her nods remain the most without a win than any other living actor. Close came into the end of awards season riding a wave of momentum that included wins at the Golden Globes, SAG Awards and Independent Spirit Awards.

Colman added the Oscar to her earlier wins at the Golden Globes, BAFTAs and National Society of Film Critics for the role.

An emotional Colman thanked her agent who took her on 20 years ago, and her children, who she wasn't sure if they were watching at home.

'My kids who are at home and watching, look!' she exclaimed. 'If you're not, then, kind of well-done, but I sort of hope you are. This is not going to happen again.'

She continued her heartfelt speech by reaching out to little girls everywhere.

'And any little girl who's practicing your speech on the telly, you never know! I used to work as a cleaner and I spent quite a lot of my time imagining this.'

She got quite a big laugh when she saw the teleprompter telling her to wrap up, blurting out, 'Oh, please wrap up, right,' before wrapping up her speech.

'To my husband Ed, my best friend, I love you so much. 25 years, you've been my best supporter and... he's gonna cry,' which got another big laugh from the audience, before adding, 'I'm not.'

'Thank you so much, Fox, everybody, the cast the crew,' even turning to presenters Francis McDormand and Sam Rockwell, thanking them, before turning to Best Actress nominees Lady Gaga and Melissa McCarthy

She turned and blew a kiss at Lady Gaga and Melissa McCarthy, as Lady Gaga blew a few back at her in one of the night's most memorable moments.

Colman wasn't the only Brit to win one of Tinseltown's biggest awards on Oscar Sunday, though her win was the most prominent.

British-born songwriter Mark Ronson won for Best Original Song for Shallow, which he co-wrote with Lady Gaga, Anthony Rossamondo and Andrew Wyatt.

Fellow Brit Paul Massey won for Best Sound Mixing for Bohemian Rhapsody, alongside Tim Cavagin and John Casali.

Nina Hartstone from Berkshire U.K. also won Best Sound Editing for Bohemian Rhapsody with John Warhurst.

Acting winners: After her big win, Colman posed backstage with the rest of the acting winners, Best Actor winner Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody), Best Supporting Actor winner Mahershala Ali (Green Book) and Best Supporting Actress winner Regina King (If Beale Street Could Talk)

Elsewhere, on the red carpet, British actress Gemma Chan gave a subtle nod to her highly-stylish Crazy Rich Asians character Astrid.

While Crazy Rich Asians is not nominated for any Oscars, there's expected to be big success for British stars at this year's awards ceremony.

Lucy Bointon and the stars of Best Picture nominee Bohemian Rhapsody were out in force with hopes of seeing the film collect a potential five gongs.

Dressed in a violet satin gown, Lucy looked exquisite as she arrived on the arm of the film's leading actor Rami Malek, who plays Freddie Mercury in the biopic.

Her British co-stars Gwilym Lee and Allen Leech joined former Jurassic Park actor Joseph Mazzello for a red carpet line-up, looking suave in dark suits.

However it was the appearance of one-time EastEnders actor Ben Hardy, formerly best known for playing Pete Beale in the soap, that caused the greatest stir.

No-one was more gleeful about their Oscars moment than Richard E. Grant, who wore a gleeful expression with daughter Olivia on his arm for the event.

Richard is nominated for Best Supporting Actor in Can You Ever Forgive Me? and truly seemed to have peaked as he waved at the crowds on his first-ever Academy Awards red carpet at the age of 61.

Sting's glamorous wife joined director Guy Nattiv along with stars of the drama, which has been nominated in the category of Best Live Action Short Film.

The Academy Of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences have made some major changes for this year's Oscars ceremony.

These range from skipping a host - after Kevin Hart stepped down - to recruiting  'highly recognized talent from various walks of life' to present the eight nominees for Best Picture, a role usually reserved for actors.

Those talents include anti-Trump chef and restaurateur Jose Andres, Daily Show host Trevor Noah and civil rights leader and Georgia congressman John Lewis and the woman who many consider to be the greatest athlete of all time, Serena Williams

It is not clear which of the nominated films will be presented by these new presenters, who also include: Dana Carvey, Queen Latifah, Tom Morello, and  Amandla Stenberg.

The final three presenters, Barbra Streisand, Diego Luna  and Mike Meyers, will almost certainly be introducing the to films with which they have close ties: A Star is Born, Roma and Bohemian Rhapsody.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
