«Breaking News» Oscars 2019: Green Book faces renewed criticism over racial stereotypes

Green Book is facing renewed criticism over racial stereotypes after it was crowned best picture at the Academy Awards - as the screenwriter admitted backstage that he didn't know Don Shirley's family were still alive until after they were filming.

The segregation-era road-trip drama has been dogged by controversy after it was widely criticized as an outdated, sentimentalized movie full of racial stereotypes.

The film tells the story of black musician Dr Don Shirley (played by Mahershala Ali) who becomes friends with his white racist driver Tony 'Lip' Vallelonga (Viggo Mortensen) as they drive through the 1960s South for a concert tour.

Green Book took home three Oscars on Sunday night, including best picture, best original screenplay and best supporting actor for Mahershala Ali.

Backstage, screenwriter Nick Vallelonga, who is the son of the white character in the film, downplayed the controversy surrounding the film and admitted he didn't realize Shirley still had living relatives when they started making the film.

Some of the controversy around the film included the musician's relatives taking issue with the story's accuracy and saying they hadn't been contacted about the portrayal.

Relatives told DailyMail.com the film was a 'symphony of lies' and 'culturally tone deaf'.

'The Don Shirley family thing falls on me, but Don Shirley himself told me not to speak to anyone. He told me the story that he wanted to tell, he protected his private life and all other things about him, miraculous things about him,' Vallelonga told reporters on Sunday night.

'He told me, if you're going to tell the story, tell it from your father, me, no one else. Don't speak to anyone else. That's how you have to make it. Also, he told me not to make it until after I pass away.

'I just kept my word to that man, I wish I could reach out to Don Shirley's family, I really didn't know they existed until we finished the film.

'I personally was not allowed to speak to his family per Don Shirley's wishes... and that's the reason for that.'

He made his way back to his seat and later backstage compared the best film selection to a loss by his beloved New York Knicks basketball team. He joked: 'The ref made the wrong call.'

Vallelonga, his co-writer and producer Brian Currie and director Peter Farrelly said backstage it was an honor to win and they were amazed and thrilled the film was crowned best picture.

'You have guys who are so diverse. They're not just racially diverse, economically diverse, educationally diverse,' Currie said.

'All of that makes for great characters. They had seemly nothing in common, and they found common ground to survive this trip.'

While hailed as a tribute to racial tolerance by its makers and stars, 'Green Book' was also widely criticized as an outdated, sentimentalized movie full of racial stereotypes.

'We know what the truth is,' Vallelonga said. 'We know how hard we tried to respect everyone involved and just tell the best story we could.'

Shirley's nephew Edwin Shirley III has previously claimed his uncle was against a movie about his concert tour.

The filmmakers also came under fire on Sunday as some criticized the director for failing to recognize Victor H. Green - the man who wrote the publication that the film's name is derived from.

The name came from Green's The Negro Motorist Green Book: An International Travel Guide, which helped African-Americans find establishments that would serve them in the segregated South.

The segregation-era ro...

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
