«Breaking News» ITV Junk Food Experiment Peter Andre and Hugo Taylor suffer side effects

Celebrities suffered startling physical and mental damage after gorging on junk food for three weeks as part of a TV experiment.

Stars including Peter Andre and Made In Chelsea's Hugo Taylor put their bodies on the line and became guinea pigs to find out what our national love of takeaways is doing to our bodies.

For 21 days the celebs overate burgers, fried chicken and pizza – Britain's top three favourite junk foods – for lunch and dinner, doubling their daily calorie intake to 4,000. The heightened effect on their bodies short term could mimic that of more gradual long term consumption.

The extreme trial, which airs tonight on ITV's The Junk Food Experiment, took place watchful eye of renowned dietary expert Dr Michael Mosley - and the rapid results were astounding.

Within a matter of days, the participants suffered side-effects like liver damage, raised blood pressure and heightened anxiety, while Olympian Tessa Sanderson responded so badly she was forced to quit early due to a risk of stroke.

'None of us expected that taking a group of healthy men and women, and asking them to over-indulge for a relatively short period, would affect their health quite as profoundly as it did,' Dr Mosley wrote in the Mail On Sunday.

Actress Hayley Tamaddon, The Chase mastermind and barrister Shaun Wallace, and politician Nadine Dorries also took part.

Every seven days the stars underwent a full-body MOT at The Harley Street Health Centre, comprising a suite of over 60 different medical tests designed by their experts to reveal exactly what is happening to them.

While some experienced weight gain, much of what went on was invisible to the eye.

Tessa, 62, represented Great Britain at the highest levels of athletics for many years, winning javelin gold at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles.

With her sporting background and concern for the future health of her six-year-old twins, she lives a pretty healthy lifestyle, with lots of fresh food and regular exercise. But within two weeks of starting on junk food, Tessa was in trouble.

She woke up one morning with a thumping headache, and when her previously healthy blood pressure was checked, it was sky-high – dangerously so.

Salt is known to increase the risk of high blood pressure, and after less than two weeks of eating junk food, Tessa’s body responded badly.

Dr Enam Abood, Head Doctor at The Harley Street Health Centre and weight-management specialist who oversaw the health of the volunteers, warned Tessa she was at risk of a stroke and advised her to stop.

The first guinea pig is singer Peter Andre, who, despite being known as the original Mr Six-Pack, confesses to being a lover of junk food. Peter works out six times a week and believes that gives him a free pass to eat what he wants.

Peter says: 'I've always believed that we should always focus on activity rather than what you eat. I want to see whether I'm actually right. Maybe, when you balance out bad and training, you're fine.'

Peter started week one eating burgers every day for lunch and dinner and his doctor wife Emily is less enamoured with his new, rather smelly, suppers. Emily says: 'He's banned from the living room because it stinks, it even smells in bed.'

As the experiment continued Peter was surprised to find his enjoyment of junk food didn't wane.

Michael sent him for an MRI scan which showed his brain might in fact be hard-wired to crave junk food, with the results exceeding those of many extremely obese people.

Despite his positivity, the on-going medical assessments during the experiment began to suggest that fat was building around Peter's vital organs and the reality of what is happening to his body started to kick in.

Meanwhile actress Hayley, of Coronation Street and Emmerdale fame, who has suffered from irritable bowel syndrome in the past, was also soon in trouble.

Fatty, greasy foods are known to aggravate the symptoms of IBS, causing intense discomfort that severely affects quality of life.

Pretty soon, Hayley started to suffer severe stomach pains. She later admitted the pain was much worse than she was letting on.

Another who really struggled was reality TV star and entrepreneur Hugo Taylor, who was so stressed by the fast-food regime that he suffered an anxiety attack.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
