Filmmaker Morgan Neville accepted the award for the examination of the life and legacy of the beloved host of the popular children's television show Mister Rogers' Neighborhood.

Neville first addressed the crowd with Rogers' familiar tag line: 'Hi, Neighbors.'

He then quickly thanked the film's producers, editors, Focus Features and his wife - a children’s librarian.

The filmmaker also took a moment to thank 'all the people who have fallen in love with this movie and what it meant.'

He concluded: 'The last thing is Fred Rogers. Fred knew that kindness was something more than something that sounds good on a bumper sticker. Radical kindness is something like oxygen and we need to have it to survive.'

The touching tribute, which probes behind the zip-up cardigans and the land of make-believe of Mr Rogers, beat off competition from Oscar nominated documentaries Hale County This Morning This Evening, Minding The Gap and Of Fathers and Sons.

It was not expected to win at the Spirits after being a surprise snub in the Oscars nominations and despite a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The documentary tells the story of a soft-spoken minister, puppeteer, writer and producer whose show was beamed into homes across America daily for more than 30 years.

The film has become the top-grossing biographical documentary of all time, earning more than $22 million at the domestic box office.

Barack Obama listed the movie as among his own favourites from the past year, according to Deadline.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
