«Breaking News» Herbalist, 83, who had teen stop taking insulin before he died gets four months in prison

A California herbalist has been sentenced to four months in prison in the death of a diabetic 13-year-old boy who was denied insulin in the days before his passing.

Timothy Morrow, 84, on Monday pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor count of child abuse likely to produce great bodily injury in the 2014 death of Edgar Lopez.

The teen passed away in August of that year, after Morrow told his mother, Maria Madrigal, to deny him insulin in favor of herbal oils he supplied and not to take the boy to hospital as he was dying.

A week earlier, Morrow, the self-described 'master herbalist' and founder of the company Common Sense Herbs, was convicted of practicing medicine without a license following an often emotional two-week trial.

As part of the his two sentences stemming from the guilty verdict and the no contest plea, Morrow will have to serve 120 days in prison, followed by four years of probation.

He also will be required to undergo child abuse counselling for a year; pay a $5,000 fine and restitution to Lopez's family for all funeral expenses; remove all videos that advocate the use of herbs instead of medical advice or medicine, and include a clear warning label on all of his herbal products.

The defendant was warned at his sentencing that if he continues ‘such acts and they cause or lead to the death of another human being,’ he can be charged with murder.

Morrow is scheduled to surrender on March 22 to begin serving his prison term.

‘This case underscores the serious health and safety risks of taking medical advice from someone who lacks a license and the proper training that goes with it,’ Los Angeles City Attorney Mike Feuer said in a statement. ‘These convictions send a strong message that my office will continue to hold accountable those whose actions place lives in danger.’

In 2014, Morrow, who touted the healing powers of natural remedies that helped him beat prostate cancer without chemotherapy or radiation, began to treat Lopez for his diabetes by prescribing herbs instead of the insulin the victim’s pediatrician had prescribed, according to the City Attorney's Office.

In August, Morrow came to the family’s Harbor Gateway home to treat the 13-year-old boy after he became extremely ill due to complications from his Type-1 diabetes.

Shortly before Lopez died, Morrow told the victim’s parents not to give him insulin but instead to administer the herbs that he was selling. The child suffered a cardiac arrest and died the next day.

The medical examiner determined the victim would have lived had he received proper medical treatment.

During Morrow's trial, his defense attorney, Sanford Perliss, asked Lopez's mother, who first met Morrow when she attended his seminars about herbs, 'Did he put a gun to your head and tell you not to give Edgar insulin?'

Morrow's defense argued that the herbalist (left) did not force Edgar (right) to reject insulin

Madrigal said that she was brainwashed by Morrow, who she said she often referred to as 'Dr. Morrow.'

'He told me that everything I got from the doctors were things from the devil,' Madrigal said.

In closing arguments, the prosecution accused Morrow of convincing Lopez's family to give him herbs instead of insulin and assuring them that the boy was going through a 'healing crisis.'

On his part, Perliss, the defense attorney, argued that nobody forced Madrigal to deny her son insulin, and that she did what she wanted to do.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
