«Breaking News» Glenn Close wins Best Female Lead for The Wife at Independent Spirit Awards

The Independent Spirit Awards brought out a bevy of celebrities to Santa Monica, California on Saturday. 

And Glenn Close won Best Female Lead for The Wife as she brought her dog Pippy on stage as 'her date'.

'We struggled for 14 years to get this movie made,' said the actress.

Barry Jenkins won Best Director for If Beale Street Could Talk.

The director took to the stage and pleaded for more women to be represented in the film industry.

Sayombhu Mukdeeprom won Best Cinematography for Suspiria. 

Ethan Hawke won Best Male Lead for First Reformed. Amanda Seyfried accepted on his behalf

Best Director: Barry Jenkins (right) won Best Director for If Beale Street Could Talk 

The cinematographer was not at the event as he was shooting a film in Italy, but he said in a statement: 'I am an independent spirit so that is why I am not there!'

Can You Ever Forgive Me won for Best Screenplay. The writer Nicole Holofcener accepted the award.

'I wish Lee Israel was here to see this although she wouldn't have been nice to anyone here,' joked Nicole about the real life author played by Melissa McCarthy.

Regina King won Best Supporting Female for her role in If Beale Street Could Talk.

The gorgeous thespian took to the stage in a maroon gown: 'I have not done a film in 10 years and I'm blessed to be part of this piece of art.'

Director Morgan Neville took the stage to accept the award: 'I want to thank all the people that fell in love with this movie over the last year.'

Stunner: Regina King won Best Supporting Female for her role in If Beale Street Could Talk 

Suspiria - which starred Dakota Johnson and Tilda Swinton - won the Robert Altman Award.

The award is presented to the ensemble cast, director and casting director of a film. 

Writer/director Boots Riley accepted the trophy: 'There's been a lot said to the new diverse voices in film. People are trying to change the way the world is.' 

Morgan Neville, Caryn Capotosto and Nicholas Ma won Best Documentary for Won’t You Be My Neighbor? 

Joe Bini won Best Editing for You Were Never Really Here.

'It was an absolute dream to work with this cast and director,' said Bini. 

Roma won the Best International Film trophy. The Mexican film was written and directed by Alfonso Cuaron.

Debra Granik won the Bonnie Award for her storied career as a director in the film industry.

Beauty: Suspiria - which starred Dakota Johnson and Tilda Swinton - won the Robert Altman Award

Caroline Kaplan, Genoel Ramirez, and Lindsey Cordero accepted the John Cassavetes Award for En El Septimo Dia.

The award is presented to the creative team of a film budgeted at less than $500,000.

We The Animals top the nomination list with five while Eighth Grade, First Reformed and You Were Never Really Here are up for four each.

The Spirit Awards are chosen by the Film Independent’s 6200 members after an anonymous committee votes on nominations. 

The eligibility rules require that movies be produced in the United States for less than $20 million.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
