Britons joked about people frantically 'panic buying' yesterday after the country endured its first significant snowfall in eight months as winter warned it is on its way with icy winds.
Social media exploded with memes and jokes as the country struggled against minimal snow, with one saying: 'People of Great Britain, the important thing is not to panic. There will be enough bread and milk for everyone. Snow is an ordinary phenomenon in winter.'
Temperatures were expected to fall to as low as -6C (21F) last night after millions of people woke up to frost and icy conditions this morning – with snow falling as far south as Brighton and Devil's Dyke in the South Downs of Sussex.
The first flurries of snow hit high ground on hills in northern England, Wales and Scotland as November closes with an icy blast after the mercury dipped to below freezing overnight. But warmer air will bring some relief today.
Motorists were warned of hazardous driving conditions on the Pennines between Lancashire and Yorkshire, with the Snake Pass between Manchester and Sheffield among the main roads covered in a blanket of snow.
Meanwhile Southern Rail passengers faced delays due to ice preventing trains getting electricity from the third rail - with disruption between Barnham and Horsham in Sussex, and Purley and Tattenham Corner in Surrey.

Higher ground in the South West of England and Wales may see a dusting tomorrow, with light snow falling in the Cotswolds. In the South, motorists were warned showers and freezing temperatures meant a risk of ice.
A cold night with clear skies was forecast last night, with a widespread frost and more chilly weather for the weekend. Today warmer air from the South will bring some relief to commuters, but the cold winds will remain.
Highs of 9C (48F) are expected in the South West today, although the wind will leave it feeling closer to 4C (39F). The day should be mostly dry across the country, with outbreaks of patchy rain.
Twitter users joked that people had gone 'gaga' over the snow - while one admitted: 'Good job I'm working from home today'
Snow is falling over parts of England this morning, including Kent, Devon and the Pennines
The outlook for today is sunny and cloudy for most of England, with rain in Scotland and Wales
The heaviest rainfalls were recorded in Yorkshire, with Hull receiving about 0.8in (20mm) in 48 hours. Snow fell in parts of Kent, Exmoor in Devon and also across the Pennines in the North, while strong winds buffeted the coast.
'We will see further snow over the high ground in England and Scotland. But it will be fairly wet stuff so it won't stay for long,' Met Office senior meteorologist Simon Partridge said.
The gusty winds, coming across from Russia and Poland, made the weather feel even colder after a warm summer and spring, he added.
But the cold blast and rain is predicted to ease today as winds shift to a south-easterly direction. 'We will get back into a dryer spell,' Mr Partridge said.

Meteorologists are working on a longer-term winter forecast, and they expect it could be a wet season.
But at this stage they are not exactly sure what kind of winter the UK is in for.
'There are very little signs either way,' meteorologist Martin Bowles said. 'Climatology is saying it will be mostly wet and windy with a couple of colder spells. But we're not expecting anything record-breaking at the moment.'
The AA warned drivers to take extra care as the weather conditions deteriorate. George Flinton, from the AA Patrol of the Year, said: 'The first really cold snap of winter can catch drivers unaware, putting them at risk.

'Preparation is key. Drivers should allow extra time for journeys, make sure their cars are clear of snow and ice before setting off and ensure they take warm clothes, food and drinks with them in case of unexpected delays.
'They should also make sure they drive to the conditions. So, allow extra space between vehicles and keep speeds down.'
Bookmaker Ladbrokes has slashed the odds on this winter being the coldest in Britain's history. Odds have dropped from 4/1 to 6/4.
Ladbrokes spokesman Alex Apati said: 'The Beast from the East is back and it looks like this winter could set new records.'

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
