«Breaking News» Trump again harps on his pet peeve about aircraft carrier catapults

President Donald Trump has again harped on the Navy's switch to electromagnetic catapults on aircraft carriers instead of steam.

Trump used a Thanksgiving Day call with a naval officer serving overseas to gripe about the Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System, or EMALS, which is replacing steam-driven catapults on Ford-class carriers.

The catapults are used to help propel aircraft off of the deck of the carrier during take-off, helping to compensate for the limited length of the flight deck.

'Would you go with steam or would you go with electromagnetic? Steam is very reliable. Electromagnetic – unfortunately you have to be Albert Einstein to really work it properly,' Trump said to the officer, who is apparently serving on a carrier.

The naval officer responded: 'Yes sir. You sort of have to be Albert Einstein to run the nuclear power plant that we have here as well, but we're doing that very well.'

'Sir, Mr President, I would go electromagnetic,' the officer continued. 'We do pay a heavy cost for transiting the steam around the ship.'

Trump thanked the officer for his candid reply, adding 'I'm actually happy about that answer, because at least they're doing what they're doing. That's actually a very good answer.'

It is not the first time that Trump has seemed to obsess over the Navy's plans to upgrade to EMALS.

In May of 2017, Trump blindsided Navy officials by declaring in an interview with Time magazine that he was ordering the carrier fleet to stick with 'godd**ned steam'.

'The digital costs hundreds of millions of dollars more money and it's no good,' Trump said, apparently referring to the EMALS.

Nevertheless, plans for EMALS, which is at the center of a multi-billion dollar carrier project, went forward, with the first tests in July of 2017 aboard the USS Gerald Ford.

In September 2017, Trump again blasted the new system as too complex, using a colorful metaphor.

'It's like when you get a new car and you have to be a computer genius to fix your seat,' Trump told the Washington Post. 'The seat's moving all over the place, it's unbelievable.'

On Thursday, Trump visited a Coast Guard station near his Mar-a-lago property in Florida, delivering sub sandwiches for the Thanksgiving holiday.

He also spend part of the morning making phone calls to troops serving overseas.

HOW THE EMALS CATAPULT WORKS

The Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System uses a linear motor drive instead of the conventional steam piston drive.

EMALS has been in development for the Navy's Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carriers.

It's meant to launch aircrafts from a carrier using the catapult method.

But rather than using a conventional steam piston drive, it uses a linear motor drive instead.

This accelerates the aircraft more smoothly and puts less stress on the airframes.

It also weighs and costs significantly less and requires little maintenance.

It's designed for to be flexible in launching both light and heavy aircrafts.

The UK, China and India have also show interest in or began developing systems that use EMALS.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
