«Breaking News» Teenage F3 driver Sophia Florsch leaves hospital after horror crash

Teenage racing driver Sophia Florsch who fractured her spine in a horrifying crash at the Macau Grand Prix said on Monday she was flying home to Germany for further treatment.

The seventeen-year-old's car flew off the track in the Formula Three race earlier this month, catapulting spectacularly over safety barriers before hurtling backwards into a hut housing media and officials.

She underwent marathon surgery when doctors battled for more than nine hours to repair her fractured vertebra and remove a bone splinter, which was sitting dangerously close to her spinal cord.

FACTORS THAT SAVED LIVES IN MACAU

Sausage kerb - Although it propelled Florsch airborne it prevented a T-Bone crash with another driver

High catch fencing - Absorbed a lot of energy and took velocity out of Florsch's car

Medics response - Medical teams reacted quickly on the scene to attend to the stricken driver

Despite her ordeal, Florsch has said she is determined to race again.

'Today I am flying back home. Really happy to see all my family and friends in the next days again,' she wrote in a Facebook post after spending more than a week in a Macau hospital.

'I am still overwhelmed by all the support I got from you fans all around the world,' she added.

Dramatic footage captured gasps from the crowd as Florsch's car flew through the air and into safety netting at the Guia Circuit's sharp right-hand Lisboa bend.

Lying 16th, she lost control in a contact down the straight, launched off a kerb and bounced off Japanese racer Sho Tsuboi's vehicle.

Florsch acknowledged her miraculous survival.

'I celebrated my 2nd birthday on the 18.11.2018 in Macau... Now a new chapter starts and I can't wait for it to begin. Let's focus on 2019,' Florsch said in her post, ending with a fingers-crossed emoji.

WHO IS SOPHIA FLORSCH?

Sophia Florsch was born in Grunwald, Germany, on December 1, 2000.

At just 17, the Formula Three driver is considered one of the up and coming drivers in motorsport.

She currently competes in FIA Formula 3 European Championship with Van Amersfoot Racing.

The German took up go-karting at the age of five and went on to compete in various competitions across Europe.

She broke a number of records in her early days and was the first female and youngest driver in three competitions.

She joined HHC Motorsport in the Ginetta Junior Championship when she was 14 and became the youngest person to win a race in the competition.

In 2015, she signed with Motopark to drive in the ADAC Formula 4 Championship.

She became the first female to score points in an ADAC Formula 4 race with her debut race.

After two years with Formula 4, she made the jump to Formula 3.

Her first test was in March and in July, it was announced she would join Van Amersfoort Racing.

She took part in the Macau Grand Prix on Sunday – but suffered a terrifying airborne crash, injuring herself and four others.

Tsuboi received treatment but was considered to have had a lucky escape after Florsch's airborne car hit the safety-arc or halo just behind his head.

A race commissioner and two photographers were also injured in the accident.

Florsch's team boss has said the historic Macau circuit was not to blame after the accident raised concerns about safety standards. The International Motoring Federation (FIA) has opened an investigation.

The 6.2 kilometre (3.9 mile) urban circuit features long straights with speeds of about 275km/h, coupled with tight, blind corners.

At least three people have died on the Macau Grand Prix course.

British rider Daniel Hegarty died last year after hitting a barrier at Fisherman's Bend during the Macau Grand Prix's motorcycle race.

In 2012, Portuguese motorcyclist Luis Carreira and Hong Kong driver Phillip Yau were killed within two days of each other during the Macau Grand Prix.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
