«Breaking News» Great British Bake Off 'moved to Channel 4 to escape three years of bullying from BBC bosses'

The Great British Bake Off's creator has claimed the show moved to Channel 4 to escape three years of 'bullying' from 'arrogant' BBC bosses. 

The cooking competition left BBC One in a £75million switchover in 2016 - sparking widespread upset among fans due to the new judges and lengthy ad breaks.

But Richard McKerrow, boss of Love Productions, alleged that BBC executives are 'the biggest bullies' and claimed he had 'no choice' but to move.

'We really had no choice. I think Bake Off would have died if we hadn’t moved,' he told the Daily Express. 

Richard revealed tensions mounted when Love Productions allegedly sued the BBC for 'copying' GBBO's format with two new shows. 

He claimed the production company's relationship with the BBC started to 'deteriorate' three years before they left the Corporation.  

'Unfortunately broadcasters bully independent producers and the BBC is the biggest bully of all and I don’t think that is healthy for the industry. I felt bullied,' he claimed.

He added: 'There is an arrogance that the BBC has that is not good for the industry.' MailOnline has contacted a BBC representative for comment.  

According to reports, Love Productions accused Hair - an in-house BBC3 production which tried to find the country's best hairdresser - of having a 'staggeringly similar' format to GBBO.

The company - founded by Richard and Anna Beattie - employed Jonathan Coad, a TV copyright specialist at law firm Lewis Silkin, to sue the BBC after the show was released in 2014.

The matter was resolved out of court when the BBC paid Love Productions an undisclosed financial settlement, Business Insider reported. 

But a year later, Love and BBC are said to have become embroiled in a similar wrangle, this time regarding The Big Painting Challenge, a show presented by Richard Bacon and Una Stubbs.

According to the Telegraph, the BBC hired an official mediation service to try to settle the claim, with executives insisting that GBBO was itself based on a similar format to the Corporation's own MasterChef.

Although it was eventually resolved, the secret row apparently led to a 'catastrophic breakdown' in relationship ahead of the GBBO negotiations.

It is understood that Channel 4 - for whom the founders of Love Productions both previously worked - waded in with a £75million deal once talks between the BBC and the production company broke down.

The BBC and Love Productions declined to comment, but a BBC source said it was 'nonsense' to say that a deal couldn't be done.

'We made a very strong offer, everyone understands why the production company made the choice they made,' they told MailOnline.

The Great British Bake Off has suffered a drop in ratings since moving to Channel 4 after seven series on BBC One. 

The 2017 final attracted 10million viewers - almost six million lower than the number who watched last year's final on BBC One, which drew in an audience of 15.9 million.

Paul Hollywood was the only original star to make the jump when the show switched channels, with previous judge Mary Berry and presenters Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins opting out.

Prue Leith took over Berry's role as a judge, while Noel Fielding and Sandi Toksvig became the programme's hosting team.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
