Many Americans will overspend and use credit cards to cover the cost of hosting Thanksgiving this year – and more than a third don't expect to pay off the cost right away, according to a new study.
Despite the expense and challenges, 76 percent said they still love to host Thanksgiving dinner.
Nearly 30 percent of Thanksgiving hosts say they will use credit cards or borrow money to put food on the table, and 28 percent said this year's celebration will be a financial strain, according to the survey of 1,040 people by LendingTree, an online loan marketplace.
Americans will spend $334, on average, to feed 11 people this year (including three overnight guests).
This chart illustrates how Thanksgiving Day hosts are feeling about the impending holiday - between the cost, time and the responsibility to show everyone a memorable time. While many are feeling stressed about finances or needing help in the kitchen, more than two-thirds say they love the responsibility of hosting Thanksgiving
The costs work out to be $31 per guest, including $251 for dinner and $83 for housewares like holiday decorations.
'Americans are under more stress right now as they look at what's been going on in the financial markets and with their 401-Ks over the last couple months,' said Brian Karimzad, vice president of research at LendingTree.
'But on the other side, wages have been rising faster than they have in recent years and some people are enjoying a tax break, so it's a mixed bag,' he told DailyMail.com.
In addition, 42 percent of hosts will take time off from work, with 56 percent of those giving up an average of $589 in pay to make the holiday special for their loved ones.
When it comes to managing the cost of Thanksgiving, 24 percent of respondents said they have strict budgets to make it feasible, while 58 percent said hosting is not actually a strain on their finances.
'You don't have the big gift giving that you have a Christmas, you don't have the big restaurant tabs that you have on Valentine's,' Karimzad said. 'This is a true frugal holiday, but one that everyone can enjoy.'
In addition, 29 percent of hosts said they expect guests will contribute to help offset their costs.
Thanksgiving isn't just an investment of money, but time – as the average host will spend about 11 hours preparing dinner.
'What surprised us was how much time is involved in preparation,' Karimzad said. 'Keep that in mind when you show up to the front door with your single bottle of wine that took you five minutes to procure at the supermarket on the way to dinner.'
A quarter of Thanksgiving hosts say they wish they had more help to cook the meal and one-in-ten wish it wasn't their responsibility at all.
Overall, 54 percent of people say they are stressed about the Thanksgiving holiday.
Turkey day is just the beginning of the big spending, with Americans slated to spend an average of $1,007 throughout the holiday season, including $638 on gifts, $215 on food and décor and an extra $155 on doorbuster deals, according to the National Retail Federation.
That spending represents a 4.1 percent increase compared to 2017, when Americans spent $967.13 on the holiday season.
Getting from Thanksgiving through New Year's Eve can be a hardship for young Americans, with 38 percent of adults age 25-34 saying they are living pay check to pay check, according to a separate LendingTree survey.
'If you're in that situation don't be afraid to ask for a little help or pitching in,' Karimzad said. 'I think everyone's had a year where their favorite host needs a little more help than usual.'
Experts at LendingTree said Americans can take steps to make it easier to afford the holiday. For example, they recommend making Thanksgiving a potluck meal in which guests are responsible for bringing side dishes.
They also suggest creating a realistic budget and thinking in advance about how much they really can afford to spend before going to the store. By sticking to a grocery list, using coupons and generic foods and keeping decorations simple, Thanksgiving doesn't have to be an unaffordable event.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
