«Breaking News» Britain faces a fight over fishing rights as Brussels demands closer alignment

Brussels is lining up for a fight with Theresa May over fishing rights and demanding deeper alignment with EU trade rules post-Brexit.

The potentially toxic demands were raised by member states as they met EU Brexit chief Michel Barnier and will be pressed further as tough negotiations continue over the weekend.

Mr Barnier met with member ambassadors in Brussels yesterday for the first time since striking an agreement with Britain on a withdrawal pact.

The discussion focused on the political declaration, a separate document which spells out the parameters for the future trading relationship.

It is still being drafted as talks continue, with both sides hoping to agree a final text by Monday. But some states which rely on EU-allocated quotas of fish from UK waters have made clear they want guaranteed access.

Fishermen in France, Spain, Denmark, the Netherlands, Sweden, Belgium, Ireland and Portugal are all varyingly dependent on their quotas.

Some wanted guarantees written into the withdrawal agreement as part of the customs union which would come into effect if the Irish 'backstop' kicks in.

But Britain scored a victory by resisting this as it would have made the commitment legally binding.

Instead, the withdrawal agreement simply states both sides will carry out their 'best endeavours' to conclude a fisheries deal by July 2020.

European capitals also want deeper 'dynamic alignment' to the bloc's trading rules. This would be in areas like state aid, environmental and workers' rights to ensure the UK cannot undercut businesses on the continent.

One source said: 'Member states are looking for more on those two issues. They effectively pointed this out, that they want a tighter declaration.'

Another diplomat said: 'Our position has not changed. We want the access to fisheries in the agreement.'

Concessions on fishing would throw any deal into further doubt as access to UK waters was a key battleground during the referendum campaign.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
