«Breaking News» Boy, 13, who has cancer is forced to sit alone in class because his teacher thinks he is contagious

A primary school teacher in south-east China has been suspended after he was accused of discriminating against a student with cancer.

13-year-old Xiaozhou, who was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma, was made to sit apart from his classmates and was not allowed to take exams as the teacher thought he was contagious, Chinese media reported.

The boy had recently transferred to Liancheng Primary School in Quanzhou, Fujian to be closer to his parents while recovering from chemotherapy treatment.

The boy's father, Zhou Xiongying, first made the allegations on social media after Xiaozhou explained why he didn't receive a mark for a midterm examination, according to Strait News.

The student said the teacher, also surnamed Zhou, forbid him to sit with other pupils in class or take exams, thinking he might be contagious. Xiaozhou had missed three exams already, according to the report.

Videos and images posted on social media show the boy sitting at a desk some distance behind the rest of the class.

'Can you imagine what was going through my son's mind during the 45-minute exam? He's forced to sit there like a fool. How sad must he have been?' Zhou was quoted as saying.

The father added that his son never mentioned anything to him because he didn't want his family to worry.

Zhou mentioned that shortly after his son had transferred to the school, the majority of the students did not show up for class.

Non-Hodgkin lymphoma is a type of cancer that develops in the lymphatic system, a network of vessels and glands spread throughout the body.

Zhou was diagnosed with the disease a year ago, but after chemotherapy treatment, he was given a clean bill of health by his doctor.

The teacher, who also held the position of vice-principal, had been suspended, according to a statement released by Fujian Huian Education Ministry.

'The Hui'an County Education Bureau recently learned about the unfair treatment of a student in Liancheng Primary School and immediately launched an investigation. Zhou, the responsible teacher, has been relieved of his duties as vice-principal and suspended from his position,' the statement said.

The incident sparked outrage on social media, where the hashtag 'primary school student discriminated against after recovering from tumour' gained more than 110 million views.

Net users slammed the actions of the teacher while offering sympathy to the boy.

'Not only does the teacher not have any common sense, he does not have the tiniest bit of empathy,' one user said. 'He is not fit to be a teacher.'

'Poor boy. After going through the hardships of cancer and chemotherapy, he ended up being discriminated against. How sad must he had felt!' another user said.

WHAT IS NON-HODGKIN LYMPHOMA?

Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma (NHL) is a type of cancer that starts in white blood cells called lymphocytes.

It affects the lymph system, which is involved in fighting infections and helping fluid move through the body.

NHL can start anywhere where lymph tissue is found, such as lymph nodes, spleen, bone marrow, tonsils and the digestive tract. It differs from Hodgkin's lymphoma due to the type of immune cells it affects.

NHL is one of the most common types of cancers in the US, making up four per cent of all forms of the disease. It is the sixth most common cancer in the UK.

NHL is grouped depending on how quickly it grows and spreads. Indolent NHL grows slowly and may not require treating straight away. Aggressive NHL spreads quickly and requires immediate treatment.

Regardless of how quickly it grows, all NHLs can spread to other parts of the lymph system if untreated. It can also spread to other parts of the body, such as the liver or brain.

Anyone can develop NHL, however, most cases occur in people in their 60s or older. For unclear reasons, it is also more common in men.

Some studies have suggested that exposure to certain weedkillers and pesticides may increase the risk, as do chemotherapy drugs and some arthritis medications. More research is required to determine this.

Patients treated with radiotherapy for other cancers are slightly more at risk of NHL in later life. Those with a weak immune system, such as HIV patients or people who have recently had an organ transplant, are also more susceptible.

A family history of NHL and being overweight are also linked to the condition.

Although rare, some women with breast implants develop a type of lymphoma in their breasts, which seems to be more common if the implants have a rough texture.

NHL treatment depends on how advanced a patient's disease is but might include chemo, radiotherapy, a stem cell transplant or, in rare cases, surgery.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
