«Breaking News» 'Worm moon' rises over US for first time in 114 years and we'll have to wait until 2024 to see again

A rare super worm moon rose across the world Wednesday night as the planet welcomed spring.

The third and final supermoon of 2019 was visible after Tuesday's full moon brought stunning sights from behind the Statue of Freedom atop the US Capitol in Washington DC, One World Trade Center in New York City and even the US-Mexican border in Anapra, New Mexico.

But it reached its full visual potential just before spring equinox.

It left stunning leaf silhouettes in a picture taken in Los Angeles, California and highlighted a cross on top of the Holy Family Cathedral in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

The first full moon this month coincided with the start of the new season for the first time since 1905.

The 'worm moon' gets its name from folklore tradition, occurring at a time when frost on the ground melts and earthworms begin to emerge.

It's the Native Americans' seasonal observation of spring.

The Worm Moon has also been referred to as the Crow Moon, Crust Moon, Sap Moon or Sugar Moon.

The Moon was at its fullest and brightest Wednesday at 9.43pm EST.

For many it was a once in a lifetime opportunity as the next worm moon isn't expected until 2044.

The term supermoon was first introduced by astrologer Richard Nolle in 1979 and specifically refers to a brighter than usual full moon.

In addition, full moons during northern hemisphere winters tend to be brighter because the Earth and the Moon are closer to the Sun and because the Moon sits higher in the sky.

A supermoon takes place when the moon is full and its orbit at its perigee point is closest to Earth. The farthest point of the ellipse is called the apogee.

On Twitter, the official account NASA Moon announced in a post: 'Today’s full Moon is also… wait for it… a supermoon!

'The moon is close to its perigee, which is the closest point in its orbit to Earth. This means this full moon appears brighter and bigger than other full moons throughout the year.'

February 19 saw the second lunar spectacle in a supermoon trilogy, when the Moon will be 221,734 miles from Earth.

The first supermoon was the 'Blood Wolf Super Moon' on January 21.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
