«Breaking News» Thousands collect rubbish pictures online in latest social media craze #Trashtag challenge

There's never any shortage of viral challenges doing the rounds, but the latest social media craze is of a rather more worthy nature than usual.

Thousands of people have been sharing snaps of their local areas looking transformed after picking up litter under the hashtag #Trashtag challenge.

The challenge was reportedly started in 2015 but has seen an overwhelming uptake recently, with more people being inspired to go outside and pick up rubbish in their local environment.

Participants from around the world have been taking to beaches, parks and roads to collect rubbish and share their before and after posts on social media.

On Instagram alone, there are more than 28,000 posts under the #Trashtag hashtag.

Though the hashtag has existed since 2015, it only boomed in popularity earlier this month, when Byron Román shared his own post on social media.

Writing on Facebook on 5th March, he said: 'Take a photo of an area that needs some cleaning or maintenance, then take a photo after you have done something about it, and post it.'

He also shared a before and after photo of a messy area being cleaned up by one young man, and tagged it #BasuraChallenge and #Trashtag - Basura meaning trash in Spanish.

His post has since been shared over 325,000 times on Facebook and thousands of others have been joining in.

It wasn't long before thousands of people had picked up on the challenge, and posted before and after photos and videos to Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and Reddit, showing themselves cleaning up beaches, parks, schools and streets all around the world.

Twitter users shared their pictures cleaning up their local area, with some calling the challenge 'the best that has ever happened to the internet'.

Another collected bags of makeup and clothes dumped in a brook, posting before and after snaps of the area.

One wrote that:'Whoever came up with the #trashtag challenge is an absolute genius. None of these dumb internet trends, let's clean the planet!'

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
