A man with a gun has opened fire at a mosque in New Zealand, reportedly injuring four people.
Witnesses reported they heard 20 shots and police are responding to the incident in Christchurch on the country's South Island.
Police have urged people near the area to stay indoors and report suspicious behaviour.
The Bangladesh cricket team - who are currently on tour in New Zealand - were inside the mosque at the time of the shooting and were forced to flee for their lives.
Mohammed Jama, the former president of the Muslim Association of Canterbury, said a man with a gun entered the Christchurch Mosque about 1.40pm local time on Friday.
He said four people were injured and that he saw two people lying on the ground. He did not know if they were alive or dead, Stuff reported.
The shooting happened near Cathedral Square where thousands of children were protesting for climate change action.
Police officers were also seen at sports ground Hagley Park and at Christchurch Hospital.
A business owner near the mosque said a man who fled the area told him the shooting happened inside.
A witness said they heard at least 20 gunshots and saw three people lying on the ground.
Another witness said he saw a car chasing two people from outside the mosque along nearby Deans Ave.
He said the people in the car began shooting at the two people.
Christchurch Boys' and Girls' high schools have both been placed into lockdown.
Parents of students at Christchurch Girls' High School were sent a text message telling them the lockdown was 'not an exercise'.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
