Shirley Ballas struggled during her first night of the Comic Relief climb up Mount Kilimanjaro.

The first episode of Kilimanjaro: The Bigger Red Nose Climb aired on Wednesday night, with emotional scenes showing the Strictly Come Dancing judge breaking down over the camping conditions.

Shirley, 58, explained she 'suffers from OCD' and is used to showering three or four times a day, before later revealing that she was feeling more emotional as she thought about her late brother.

As the nine celebrities reached their first camp on day one, Shirley was overcome at the prospect of spending her first ever night in a tent.

'I'm 58 and I've never been out in the wood or even done outdoor activities,' she explained.

'I suffer from OCD, I like showering all the time. I'm used to bathing three or four times a day. The prospect of having to wash all your bits and bots with a wet wipe is daunting,' she added before having to turn away from the camera with tears in her eyes.

Luckily BBC Breakfast presenter Dan Walker was on hand to cheer the Strictly star up, advising Shirley: 'Why don't you harness Shirley Ballas three times world champion?'

Shirley later explained her emotions were also down to the motives behind her decision to take part in the challenge.

'While I'm clearly struggling with the camping for sure, I've been comfortable in the boots, the outfit, all good, except when we came on the camp,' she said.

'But I try to keep my brother in the forefront of my mind. I mean, he's a big reason I did this and I'm getting a little emotional.'

Shirley's brother took his own life in December 2003, which Shirley opened up on in a special film during the programme on male suicide.

Speaking to Paul who turned back from taking his own life with the help of mental health charity Calm, a project which as been funded by the money raised from Comic Relief, Shirley explained:

'My brother took his own life. You know, he was a young man, 44. He was like my bother, my father, my best friend and was lonely, he felt low. He said like he’d got into a dark hole, he couldn’t get out of.'

'I’d call him on the phone and tell him, ‘Come on David, you’re going to be fine,’ because I was uneducated so that’s why in some ways I blame myself.'

'I can only imagine 16 years ago, if my brother would’ve had somewhere to go, somebody to talk to, somebody to share his feelings, I truly believe in my heart today, he would still be here.'

Later as she prepared to sleep on the first night of the climb, Shirley told the camera: 'I think my brother would be proud of him, I miss him so I'm doing it got him. If it means sleeping in a tent and being disorganised for a week I'm sure I can do it.'

Since David's death, Shirley has become an ardent campaigner for mental health awareness.

Shirley,...

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
