«Breaking News» SEBASTIAN SHAKESPEARE: Mishal Husain to cut down TV commitments and 'concentrate on Today programme'

She once memorably inspired the headline that she was ‘Putting the Phwoar!! into Radio 4’.

Now Mishal Husain is about to be anointed — if not quite crowned — the queen of the Today programme when veteran broadcaster John Humphrys steps down later this year.

Forty-six-year-old Husain, who is married with three sons, has been part of Today’s presenting team since 2013.

But it has been a part-time role — one that she has juggled with her duties as a presenter of BBC’s flagship News At Ten.

Soon, though, her exact enunciation will be heard almost exclusively on Today.

‘She is cutting down her commitment to News At Ten to concentrate on Today,’ I’m told.

‘It’s truly a change of era. She’s seen as able to fill John’s shoes and will be central to the programme’s future, but she cannot be called “lead presenter” because it risks putting fellow presenters’ noses out of joint.’

It’s praise that Husain will surely find particularly sweet, given how she tangled with the combative Humphrys when she appeared on Celebrity Mastermind a decade ago.

‘You’re a newsreader and a very good-looking woman,’ remarked Humphrys.

Husain thanked him, only for Humphrys, 75, to add: ‘But there’s a “but”. Are you doing your job only because you are good-looking?’

When critics subsequently accused him of ‘humiliating’ Husain, Humphrys retorted that it had been ‘a perfectly reasonable line of questioning’ for which he would not apologise.

Husain reputedly did not speak to him again until she joined Today four years later.

Humphrys’s impending departure means that, in future, all Today’s presenters, including Nick Robinson, Martha Kearney and Justin Webb, will have been privately educated — in Husain’s case, at Cobham Hall, Kent, alma mater of the Duchesses of Wellington and Northumberland.

The BBC declines to comment, saying that it is ‘not confirming anything to do with [News At] Ten at the moment’.

Mariella's phoney war with her kids

Husky-voiced broadcaster Mariella Frostrup, who has two teenage children with her husband, lawyer Jason McCue, admits she rules with an iron fist at home.

‘I’m very strict with [my children’s] use of social media. I’m a nightmare,’ she tells me at the launch of her book, Wild Women, at The Academy Hotel in Bloomsbury.

‘I enforce bans at the weekend and I’m constantly taking their phones from them. We’re always arguing about it.’

The rules don’t just apply to Molly, 14, and 13-year-old Dan, however.

‘I don’t care what age you are — we never have phones at the dinner table. It’s uncivilised.

You’ve been warned: Gordon Brown’s wife Sarah is ready for her next adventure.

‘The last adventurous thing I did was go travelling with my girlfriends — Sandi Toksvig and Kathy Lette — and we walked the Cornish coastal path,’ she tells me.

‘We’re plotting our next long walk, which I’m really looking forward to.

We’re going to try to be more adventurous this time though — maybe Scotland or round the North of England.’

Jimmy's whole lotta love poetry

Rocker Jimmy Page was every inch the doting partner as the 75-year-old attended the launch of his girlfriend Scarlett Sabet’s new volume of poetry, Camille.

Scarlett, an actress 46 years his junior, recited a selection of her verse to friends at Mortimer House in London. Just as she was about to read out a poem on sexual passion, she teased: ‘I’ll let you guess who this is about.’ At which a guest heckled: ‘It’s obviously Jimmy!’

How touching that the Led Zeppelin legend, once famed for a wild life of rock ’n’ roll excess, is now a poetic muse.

Are The Duke and Duchess of Sussex too intimate in public? Royal author Anna Pasternak thinks so.

Pasternak, who has just published a new biography of Wallis Simpson, the original American divorcee who married into the Royal Family, takes a dim view of their public displays of affection.

‘Even Wallis kept her hands to herself in public,’ she tells me.

‘Harry and Meghan are so terribly touchy-feely. I think it’s a bit much, actually.

If you are secure with someone, you don’t have to do that. You can let people know there’s a connection with a look.’

Another baby on the way for great-grandpa Jagger

Sir Mick Jagger, who has eight children by five women, is preparing to welcome another baby into his Byzantine family.

For I can reveal his granddaughter, Assisi Jackson, is due to give birth in time for his 76th birthday this summer, making him a great-grandfather for the second time.

The Rolling Stone’s ex-wife, Bianca Jagger, let the news slip during her speech at the launch party for her book about sustainable development, 2030 NOW, in Knightsbridge.

‘We need to do what is necessary to prevent climate change,’ says Bianca.

‘I say that because I have a daughter, three grandchildren, one great-granddaughter and another one about to be born.’

Bianca confirmed that she was referring to homeopath Assisi, 26, who lives in London with her boyfriend, chef Alex Key, and their four-year-old daughter, Ezra.

Let’s hope that this time it comes as less of a shock to her 47-year-old mother, Jade, who says of Assisi’s first pregnancy: ‘I panicked, even though she was older than I had been when I had her [at 20].

‘I learned first-hand that becoming a mother ends your childhood and changes your life in a way that nothing else can.’

Form an orderly queue at the box office! Double Olivier Award-winner Lindsay Duncan reveals she’s returning to the London stage after nearly a decade.

‘I’m doing one at the National Theatre in September called Hansard,’ the 68-year-old tells me, referring to the debut play by actor Simon Woods, who is married to ex-Burberry creative director Christopher Bailey.

‘How does it feel being back on stage? I don’t know, because I haven’t done it yet! But I do know it will be nice to be back.’

Trinny's what not to wear to a memorial...

Fashion guru Trinny Woodall, wearing a canary-yellow trouser suit, platform trainers and a big fluffy white coat, outshone more sombrely clad congregants at the memorial service for socialite Countess Maya von Schoenburg.

The party-loving aristocrat and ex-wife of billionaire Mercedes-Benz heir, Mick Flick, was given a royal send-off at the Brompton Oratory.

‘The Prince of Wales, who really loved Maya dearly, explicitly asked Lord Freddie Windsor to attend as his representative,’ a family member told me.

During mass, Mozart’s Requiem was performed and afterwards a bagpiper played The Dark Island and other laments as the guests, including Jemima Goldsmith, made their way from the Oratory to the Lodge.

Fittingly, Hillary Clinton was also there. The former First Lady attended the last party Maya hosted — her 60th birthday bash at Munich’s Oktoberfest last year.

Radio presenter Penny Smith, who has been in a relationship with actor Vince Leigh for 18 years, says she’ll never marry him.

‘Even though it happened a long time ago, I am divorced.

'I see no reason to get married again unless suddenly they change the tax law and make it so tax-efficient that there is no reason not to,’ she tells me.

But the 60-year-old admits there are some complications. ‘When you get to a certain age, saying “boyfriend” just doesn’t sound right. That’s what teenagers say. So I just call him “my bloke”.’

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
