«Breaking News» PLATELL'S PEOPLE: Can't Harry and Wills be brothers in arms forever?

Sadly, it is now official. Harry and Meghan are formally to separate their Kensington households and offices from William and Kate’s.

After decades of us believing Diana and Charles’s boys were inseparable, they are going their own ways.

Of course, the separation was inevitable. William is 36 and Harry 34. The former must step up to prepare for the day he becomes Prince of Wales and heir to the throne.

Harry, on the other hand, must accept his role as another jobbing royal — a senior one, yes, but we must always remember he is only sixth in line to the throne.

Yet the parting of these boys still feels wrong, somehow. Almost like a divorce.

Penny's Rod's favourite

When Rod Stewart, 74, married Penny Lancaster after his second wife Rachel Hunter left him, many thought it wouldn’t last.

After all, this was his third marriage and he’d already fathered six children by four different mothers.

Yet there they were at Cheltenham races this week, arm-in-arm, laughing together and looking thoroughly loved-up (pictured).

As he grinned at Penny, I swear I could hear him humming This Old Heart Of Mine and Have I Told You Lately That I Love You.

They have been through so much together. They endured the bitter disintegration of their parents’ marriage. Supported each other after Diana’s death. The fraternal bond forged under the intense media spotlight is so tangible, strong — and seemed so unbreakable.

In a way, there are three degrees of separation. First, the practical business, as in any divorce. The disentangling of their business — or charitable — interests.

Who can forget how, only a year ago, the Fab Four made their first official appearance together to support the Royal Foundation, described on its website as ‘the primary philanthropic and charitable vehicle for The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’. Can the foundation now continue to exist? Then there’s the geographical separation. While the Cambridges will continue to live in and operate from Kensington Palace, the Sussexes will move to Frogmore Cottage at Windsor. True, Harry and Meghan will keep London offices — but, tellingly, at Buckingham Palace, not Kensington.

Westminster Noticeboard...

+ Proof, if it were needed, that Tory MPs such as Europhile Amber Rudd are contemptuous of the will of their voters: 32 of the 46 who voted to block No Deal Brexit, including leadership hopeful Rudd, represent Leave constituencies.

+ The Lib Dems have suspended Lord Steel after he admitted serial paedophile MP Cyril Smith confessed his crimes to him in 1979, yet he took no action, leaving Smith to go on to abuse more children. Steel shouldn’t just be kicked out of his party, but the House of Lords too.

Living out at Windsor, Harry and Meghan surely risk being left out of the royal loop.

There’s an ominous precedent, too: the future Edward VIII, who also married an American divorcee, chose to live at Fort Belvedere in Windsor and it’s where he signed the instrument of abdication.

But perhaps the most significant degree of separation is one of outlook, or ‘world view’. Since Meghan came on the scene, Harry’s outlook has changed — he’s become more ‘right-on’ and politically correct. That might explain the appointment of celebrity American PR guru Sara Latham to handle the Sussexes’ affairs — but it could not be more different from Kate and William’s outlook.

New offices, a new home and an exciting new path for the couple. But I just wish Wills and Harry could remain brothers in arms for ever.

Why bend truth, Kate?

Kate Winslet stars in a new movie playing the little-known dinosaur fossil hunter Mary Anning, whom she portrays as a lesbian.

This despite Anning’s descendants insisting there is no evidence whatsoever to back this up.

But, hey, there’s no chance of an Oscar these days unless the heroine is an overweight, over-achiever who struggled with her sexuality.

It worked for Olivia Colman, who fatuously played an ageing lesbian in that incomprehensible film The Favourite.

Keep it private, J-Lo

Former baseball star Alex Rodriguez went down on bended knee at sunset on a beach in the Bahamas and proposed to singer Jennifer Lopez with a £1.4 million diamond ring.

She gasped and said ‘Yes!’ before sharing the intimate images online with her fans.

A few days later, Alex was photographed with a black eye, after one of his former team-mates claimed that the future Mr J-Lo had been having a long-term affair with his ex-wife.

Confused? I am, but not half as bewildered as I am by how all of us saw pictures of this mega-rich couple’s private moment on a private beach — complete with diamond ring — in the first place.

Maybe that’s the way the mega-stars do it these days — a secret moment with just him, her, their private photographer . . . and the rest of the world.

Bodes well, doesn’t it?

 Agony of a last call

After burglars broke into 77-year-old pensioner Maureen Whale’s home to steal her handbag, she phoned 999.

The terrified former nurse described the intruders not as villains, but as ‘two young men’.

She started struggling for breath as a result of the ordeal and apologised, saying: ‘I can’t talk, I’m sorry.’

They were her last words before she collapsed and died.

What makes this tragic story so much more upsetting is the contrast between the polite way this considerate elderly woman talked to 999 operators even as she was frightened out of her skin — and the monstrous behaviour of the young thugs who robbed her for the few pounds in her handbag.

Either way, not a good look, when you end up doing a passable impersonation of a Bratz doll

Julia Roberts says she was reluctant to take on her lead role in Notting Hill as ‘the world’s biggest movie star who falls in love with a bookshop owner’, suggesting that the storyline seemed implausible.

Funny that. As one of the world’s biggest movie stars, she’s been blissfully married for 17 years to Danny Moder . . . a humble cameraman.

Twiggy collected her damehood at Buckingham Palace from Prince Charles, who told her: ‘It’s about time.’ After 50 years in the fashion business, still working and without ever being snapped snorting coke (Kate Moss), or throwing mobile phones at her staff (Naomi Campbell), she’s happily married with a daughter and stepson. Dame Twiggy proves that in the vacuous fashion world, she’s not a twig, she’s an oak.

Half a century after Bloody Sunday, the witch-hunt of our soldiers continues, with solitary ‘Soldier F’ to be prosecuted. While having the greatest sympathy for the bereaved families, I also grieve for the loved ones of the 29 murdered shopping on a Saturday morning in Omagh by the Real IRA barely 20 years ago, for whose deaths not one single IRA ‘soldier’ has been prosecuted.

After Strictly presenters Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman performed a 24-hour dance marathon for Comic Relief, the exhausted pair vowed they’d never take to the dancefloor again. A great relief to us all.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.

Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
