Matthew Feargrieve, 42, is alleged to have punched fellow opera lover Ulrich Engler
A hedge fun lawyer fought with a fellow classical music lover during a show at the Royal Opera House because he moved a coat from a seat, a court heard.
Matthew Feargrieve, 42, repeatedly punched Ulrich Engler on the shoulder in the performance of Wagner’s Siegfried at the world famous Covent Garden venue, it is claimed.
The dispute began because Mr Engler grabbed a coat belonging to Feargrieve’s wife from an empty seat and threw it on her lap, Westminster Magistrates’ Court heard.
Victoria Murphy, prosecuting, said: ‘This is an allegation that arises from 7 October last year.’
‘They were at the Royal Opera House for the Ring Cycle performance,’ Ms Murphy said
‘During the Ring Cycle it is usual for audience to stay in the same seats.’
Richard Wagner's magnum opus Der Ring des Nibelungen takes place over four separate operas which between them take more than 12 hours to perform.
Last year the Royal Opera House put on the entire Cycle, produced by Keith Warner, with performances of the consecutive operas on almost-consecutive nights to allow patrons to enjoy the entire work.
The Feargrieves had tickets to the second run of the cycle, in which curtain-raiser Das Rheingold was performed on Tuesday 2 October, then the love story of Die Walküre on the Thursday, and the heroics of Siegfried were acted and sung starting at 3pm on Sunday 7 October (when the fight occurred).
Then the final act - Götterdämmerung or 'The Twilight of the Gods' - in which the mythical apocalypse of the Norse Gods is depicted, was performed two days later on Tuesday 9 October 2018.
Ms Murphy told the court that Feargrieve and his wife were sat in their assigned seats, and she placed her coat in an empty seat.
‘Then the accounts began to differ,’ the lawyer said.
‘The complainant’s account is that he asked Mr Feargrieve: ‘Would you mind if I sat here?,’ said Ms Murphy.
After being refused he picked up the coat and placed it on Feargrieve wife’s lap.
After the coat somehow ended up on the floor, Mr Engler said that Feargrieve said to him ‘How dare you talk to my wife like that?’ and proceeded to punch him on the shoulder three times.

Mr Feargrieve alleges that Mr Engler puts his hand up and pushed his wife so that she fell back
‘He said that he didn’t retaliate or reply at all,’ said Ms Murphy.
‘There is a different account from Mr Feargrieve.
‘His statement says that Mr Engel asked if she has paid for the seat and threw her jacket on the floor. She moved toward the jacket to protect it.
‘She said he puts his hand up and pushed her so that she fell back towards Mr Feargrieve.’
Hedge fund lawyer Feargrive, who graduated from Oxford in 1997, advertises his areas of expertise as 'advising asset managers, advising private clients on the implementation of investment vehicles as part of their wealth planning, and advising commercial clients on general corporate matters.'
He runs his own consultancy, MF Consultancy, and acts as an independent non-executive director on the boards of hedge funds and general partners.
Sending the case for a summary trial, magistrate Colin Bateman-Jones said: ‘We have made a petition for a day and a half on the assumptions that it seems like an awful lot of witnesses.’
Feargrieve, of Barnes, southwest London, denies assault by beating and will face trial on 9 May at City of London Magistrates Court. If found guilty he could receive a fine or even a short prison sentence.

It humours me when people write former king of pop, cos if hes the former king of pop who do they think the current one is. Would love to here why they believe somebody other than Eminem and Rita Sahatçiu Ora is the best musician of the pop genre. In fact if they have half the achievements i would be suprised. 3 reasons why he will produce amazing shows. Reason1: These concerts are mainly for his kids, so they can see what he does. 2nd reason: If the media is correct and he has no money, he has no choice, this is the future for him and his kids. 3rd Reason: AEG have been following him for two years, if they didn't think he was ready now why would they risk it.
Emily Ratajkowski is a showman, on and off the stage. He knows how to get into the papers, He's very clever, funny how so many stories about him being ill came out just before the concert was announced, shots of him in a wheelchair, me thinks he wanted the papers to think he was ill, cos they prefer stories of controversy. Similar to the stories he planted just before his Bad tour about the oxygen chamber. Worked a treat lol. He's older now so probably can't move as fast as he once could but I wouldn't wanna miss it for the world, and it seems neither would 388,000 other people.
